I have a question for adding cold-brewed coffee to a batch. How do you sanitize it? You could boil the water, or used purified water in a sanitized press but what about the coffee grounds? sanitize the beans and grinder before grinding?

We did that once, but we didn't grind the beans ourselves... I just sanitized a half-gallon container and added water and coffee grinds... let it sit for a few days in the fridge prior to brewing.

Northern brewer has great stuff. But you'll get your things in quicker from Austin Homebrew Supply. it's where i got my starter equipment kit and where i get most of my homebrew supplies. And go to a restraurant supply store and pick yourself up a brew pot.

Yeah, that'd work. Get plastic carboys.

looks good. you'll also need a pot, a thermometer and a hydrometer

and don't worry, you'll want to upgrade your shite as soon as you start

I agree with S14 about the plastic carboy. they are so much easier to deal with.

Real surprised that the kit doesn't include a hydrometer.

Upgrade the hand bottle capper to a bench capper. Way, way easier.

That's similar to what i started with. Except i use glass carboys.

You will need a brewpot. You can get by with a 5 gallon brewpot and do partial boils (you'll know when you read about it). But eventually, if you take to it, you will be buying more equipment. It took me about a year before i started doing some upgrades. First was a 9.5 gallon brewpot, then came the switch to all-grain brewing.

My next upgrade will be to start kegging, then building a brew sculpture and start 10 gallon batches.

AHS ships within a couple days and you'll get it the day after it ships. That's the basic kit I started with, except glass, but I've bought 2 more plastic 6 gallon carboys since then

with that kit, you'll also need a bottling bucket. get a $3 5-gallon bucket from home depot and a bottling spigot instead of paying $15 for one already made

Update on grains based on FD Homebrewer's input

Oatmeal Stout (Name pending)
Grains
80% Maris Otter Malt
6% De-bittered Black (Carafa III)
3% Chocolate Malt
4% Coffee Malt
7% Roasted Oats
4% Crystal 75 (Possible deletion. I need to go back and figure out why i had this in there)

Book?

The Food and Drink Board is all the resource you'll ever need.

that's the primary fermenter. you have to add on the bottling bucket, and you pay way too much for it through them
