Mosquitos are fine. I'm more worried about this storm I see rolling in.

We just finished clean up. Started around 7 so not a terrible day. Even with a 90 minute boil. Came out a little low efficiency wise but nothing that I'm too unhappy with. Hopefully suspense doesn't fault me for my all grain mishap compared to extract's precision. Good brew night all around. Prepared to do it all again tomorrow.

My buddy who's son and he are in some of you guys beer club took off yesterday. I'm assuming they were brewing since he told me they were about out of stock and heading to Abita the other day for supplies. I'll have to ask him what they brewed-I think something smoked and maybe another of his strawberry ambers.

Have the day off today. Working up a Russian imperial stout now. After it has fermented I will age it on some oak cubes soaked in bourbon.
I think I might brew the house rye pa tomorrow.

Nice, I should have done that as well.
Frat: How's the fermentation on the Consecration beer going? I don't care about the slightly low gravity. I'm sure it'll be fine.
We brewed a Chocolate hazelnut porter kit yesterday that didn't include the 8 oz of Black patent malt... went ahead and brewed it without it but who knows how it'll turn out.

I was worried yesterday morning when I saw no signs of fermentation. Then it took off like a rocket. So its fermenting nicely.

What you think about no Black patent in that kit?
Posted on 7/5/12 at 10:28 am to s14suspense
I don't think I added Black Patent to my porter. I used Brown and Chocolate and I think it came out real nice. I think the Black Patent will add a lot of roast to the flavor, so not sure you will miss it.

Yeah, we were thinking about dry hopping it with some coffee grounds or something like that.
Glad to hear the RR beer is going strong.

I don't use much BP in most porters. How much chocolate was included? It may turn out to be more of a brown porter than a robust porter but no harm there.

What type of chocolate did you put in?

Right, I figured that a stout ingredient.

.75 lb Chocolate Malt
It's definitely very dark brown.

adding 8 oz of cocoa nibs to secondary.

Cocoa nibs will be good. Add a little vanilla extract as well to really bring it out (or a vanilla bean).

The beer is Jamil's kit so its got 25 ml of hazelnut extract and we'll probably throw it in out new used bourbon barrel.

Well, today my brew kit is coming in for the AHB Summer Crisp IPA All-Grain. I will be smacking my wyeast pack tonight, and sanitizing all my equipment. Tomorrow i will make a starter, and Sunday is brew day.
First all-Grain batch. Can't wait.

I picked up a 4 pack of Rayon Vert. That stuff is good. It's like a hoppy belgian ale. I liked it alot.

I was thinking that if you threw in cocoa nibs or something with a little bitterness that would take the place of the roasty aspect that the BP would bring to the table.
