Hepatitis A cases linked to Galatoire’s

Well this is fricking disgusting. I had no idea there was a hepatitis a issue in the state.

I haven’t been to Galatoire’s since pre covid (Mardi Gras). Come to think about it I haven’t been to any blue blood in the quarter since pre covid.

Hepatitis A is in raw oysters occasionally, not necessarily Galatoire’s fault.
Hepatitis A gets cleared by healthy people. Most have mild symptoms. Not chronic like Hep B or C
I had it in my mid 20’s after eating 3 dozen raw oysters. Had mild upper abdominal pain for a couple days. Thats it.

I was thinking it was spread due to unsanitary issues. The oysters makes sense. I feel like every year you hear of a death due to eating raw oysters, didn’t realize it was hep a killing them.

yes it’s oysters.
shite happens, if you are compromised you shouldn’t eat them raw.
there’s a damn disclaimer usually on the menu or on a sign at the door or host station

I don't think Galatoire's serves raw oysters. They have several baked versions, but not raw. I was there a few weeks ago. No problems.

Vibrio is normally what causes illness from consumption of raw oysters.

The large outbreak (across the country as well as in Louisiana) since 2018 wasn't foodborne. It was a person to person Hep A outbreak. Hep A can be a foodborne illness though and usually is caused by something happening to the food prior to it getting to the restaurant. That's why you shouldn't have a garden next to a sewage plant. It could also be due to a contagious person preparing food at a restaurant. Raw oyster illnesses usually (but not always) are from Vibrio.
