Crumpled up heavy duty foil works perfectly well.

I don’t use a grill brush at all, I just wash the grate in the sink. I’ve got a small grill, a PK360 with stainless steel grates, and a large single-basin sink, so it’s easy to clean.

No mention of Brillo pads yet, but that’s what I use on my gas grill. Takes about 2 of them for the 4 separate grates and just rinse after. That’s what I find works best.

I try to keep some cheap onions/tin foil on hand for this very reason.

I’ve been using crumpled aluminum foil for years. Works fine along with burning off for a few minutes ahead of using it.

I’ve got some contraption that uses replaceable stainless steel scrubbing pads as the abrasive. When it gets filled crud, you just replace the pads. It works well when the grill is still hot.
