A long time ago, FritoLay made a packaged dip mix they called Green Onion Mix. They displayed it on little racks in front of the Ruffles. There is no way I can tell you how good it was, mixed with sour cream. We loved the stuff at our house, and then one day it was gone from the Chip section of Jitney Jungle.

We waited a week or two and then panic ensued. In a case of perverted marketing deviance hey had removed it from their product line.

Oh the culinary pain!

For years, I consumed dip that was very much inferior to the old Lays product. And then one day about six months ago I was on the mayo/ketchup/mustard isle at our Kroger store and there on the top shelf was a carton of Kroger Green Onion Dip mix.

I grabbed a couple of packages and a carton of Sour Cream and a bag of Ruffles (which by the way have always been made by FritoLay) and with trembling hands, mixed up a batch.

All I can say is Chips and Dip Heaven was discovered again.

The next time, I purchased maybe 10 packs of mix. I might go buy a full case of the stuff. It is that good

Try some when you can.

We actually discussed moving back to Starkville when we retired so we could go back to school.

I'm not sure MSU would have survived me in the Microbiology/Biochemistry PhD program.

I also liked that stuff but my favorite of all time is Borden's french onion. That stuff is so great. It has changed a little, but not much, since I was a kid. I have to force myself to stop eating it.

It's great.

I may have to try that with the addition of chopped fresh green onions. I love green onions.

I will look for that. We ate the heck out of that kind of dip when I was a kid.

Recently started making dip with the old Lipton beefy onion soup mix. Using Fage Greek Yogurt instead of sour cream cream cuts lots of calories, and it tastes great. Add some soy sauce for extra umami.

That’s awesome you found it again. Wonder if you could look at the ingredient list and try to reproduce it for the next time it goes mia.

Look at ingredient list

I am too wise in the ways of these kinds of products to look at the ingredients list. As a former chemist (drugs, cosmetics, food products), I understand where 27 letter chemical compounds (3,6,8 isopolygloco-whatever-they-call it) come from and try not to know they are most of the things I love and are likely the reason I love them. Also, most of those compounds only come in 50 pound sacks, so they are very hard to purchase.

Better to buy
