Pretty racist comment.

That's like saying that a restaurant owned by a guy with a Greek name like Tony Karides is automatically not a Mexican restaurant.

That's not a racist statement, it's a fact. Show me a Greek restaurant run by a guy named Ahmed or Mohammed and I will concede you are correct, but you will be unable to do it. And by Greek restaurant, I do not mean a place that has a machine from Kronos as its sole qualification. I would say LaFonda is more of a Tex-Mex place.

But since you wanted to go there - in order for your post to make sense, LaFonda would have to be selling Greek food and calling it a Mexican place, the same way the arabs passing their places off as greek do.

Another ignorant comment. Basically like saying any number of pizza places in New York that advertise as being Kosher are automatically not an Italian pizzeria.

It's not ignorant. It wouldn't even enter the mind of a Greek to promote his place as being halal. Ever seen halal pork? The best souvlaki and real gyros are both made from pork.

How is the pizza place in your example able to be kosher? Do they serve solely vegetarian pizza?

La Fonda is BR's oldest Mexican restaurant, and owned by a family of Greek folk (Tony Karides et al). By his logic, everyone should avoid that place because of the name of the owner (never mind the fact that Greek people have lived in Mexico, and Arabs have lived in Greece).

No one said a word about avoiding anywhere. I simply stated how one could tell who's running a place. You're trying to make it into something it isn't, but that's hardly surprising.

Is that what they call it on the menu?

Typically Greeks will refer to it as melitzanosalata.

When it's good, it's really good - a favorite of mine.

How about the most well known Greek restaurant in the state of Ohio, The Happy Greek? Serving Keftedes, Souvlaki, skordalia, kopanisti, dolmadakia, spanakopita, avgolemeno soup, pastitsio, etc.

Owner?

Mohamed Hassan

Anyway Fratagonia, to answer your question
Check into
Lashish - out in Denham Springs
Cafe' Phoenicia - out in Zachary

both are more along the lines of Mediterranean than Greek, but worth a visit non the less

Yeh...that is what they call it...I am not sure anyone in NOLA would recognize it under the Greek name. I have never had better than what they serve at Acropolis though...

OK, there's one. There are exceptions to every rule. Of course that still doesn't change the gist of what I said and it sure as hell doesn't make Atcha's a "Greek" restaurant.

It is interesting that Mr. Hassan has no pork on his menu, but does have couscous, kibbeh and falafel.

It's interesting that you mentioned tzatziki - that's generally another giveaway - be wary when a place calls it "Grecian Sauce." That shite just makes me cringe.

BTW, I would appreciate if you could explain to me how that statement was racist.

Where exactly are they - you're making me want to go.

Any idea if they have skordalia on the menu as well?

this thread is so great and illuminates what's amazing about the people of south LA. i'd wager that if you go to any of the tailgates that people have invited you to, that the food will be amazing and so will the company. It never ceases to amaze me how generous people are with their tailgate food.

If there's better tailgating anywhere than there is here, I have no idea where it is.

Thet are in a strip mall with subway on the lake side of Veterans (before you hit wendys and mcdonalds at the clearly intersection).

They are Greek...I think they would appreciate someone with your nknowledge requesting a dish...the older woman is the mother...she is the most on top of things and that is who you want to be your server...she is very close with my parents and their busienss.

Sounds like I definitely need to try them out.

Any idea where they're from in Greece? It's always interesting to go to restaurants owned by people from different places and see their takes on things.

That was one of the neat things about Zorba's was to see the Cypriot take on the foods - just a little different than what I grew up with and just about every thing they plated was outstanding. I miss that place.

Never been to Greece at all. Dad and I were supposed to go for HS graduation, but it never happened and that was 16 years ago. He's taken some students (as well as his kids and wife once) on trips there. I think the wife and I may be able to tag along the next time.

Definitely going to stop at Acropolis next time I'm in Metairie.

Greece is great place. I spent a week or so during my youth. I'd love to go back now that I have some dough to spend.

Guaranteed you'll have a great time.

I take it you weren't brought up Orthodox? You're from BR?

No doubt we'd have a blast. Raised Catholic in different parts of LA., mostly in BR area. Dad's side of the family is from Chicago. Know a couple of Greek girls from there who travel there regularly. Probably could have taken a couple of trips with them back before we all settled down.
