Find a good store that will pour you some samples. Not sure where you are, but Martin's in NOLA will have stuff open for you to try. A good wine & spirit guy can get you in the right direction.
I'm more of a bourbon drinker, so for me, some solid $20-30 pours would be Henry McKenna and Elijah Craig.

Scotch isn't whiskey, it's whisky.

I'd suggest (again) Texas Ranger Whiskey from Rebecca Creek Distillery. Mild with a nice caramel finish. $20 range. Similar to Pendleton, but a little smoother.

How about your read the entire thread before you start mouthing off dipshit?
He was saying he doesn't know much about bourbons and wanted to start drinking scotch. What is so tough about that?

Single barrel is better.
I also like Elijah Craig small batch and single barrel as well as regular Knob Creek (100 proof).

If you like scotch, perhaps it’s that smoky/peaty characteristic that appeals to you. Texas whiskeys might be what the doctor ordered.
If so, try Garrison Brothers which is kind of oaky.
Balcones makes one that’s like drinking a campfire. If that description appeals to you, pick up a bottle of Balcones Brimstone. I personally cannot sip more than 1 pour of it because it’s too intense.
If you want to dial it back a notch and want something more scotchy, get their single malt. It’s called Balcones One.
In my opinion the whiskey that strikes the right balance of smoke and oak is Yellow Rose Distillery’s Outlaw bourbon.

Sorry this scuffle between you two is probably my fault
I should've said I don't know a lot about whiskeys. I don't know the difference between bourbon, scotch, or whiskey. I thought whiskey was a kind of umbrella term for bourbon and scotch. I had some really good scotch and wanted to try more like that, but I'm fine with any of the three (bourbon, scotch, whiskey)

I’m a scotch drinker. The biggest thing about a good scotch, you are not going to find a good one under $50, but there are plenty of good bourbons under $50.
Eagle Rare
Jefferson Reserve

Drop the term “whiskey”. It is just an umbrella term. You have bourbon, scotch, Canadian whiskey, Japanese whiskey, etc.

If you want some good bourbon that won’t set you back much try Redemption. Just had it recently and really enjoyed it.
My favorite at the next price level is Wathens.
I also like Jim Beam Devils Cut
