Chef Buster Holmes' recipe included an 8 oz can of tomato sauce per lb of beans. I've tried it. It doesn't make it taste tomatoey at all and it adds some savory umami flavor.

Soak the beans in 12oz of beer. Just learned this trick. They are now awesome.

Do you discard the beer before cooking? I've read about using beer with pinto beans, but I haven't done it.
