Do you think health risks associated with second hand smoke are legitimate?

That's my only hang up about allowing smokers to smoke in crowded businesses. IMO it's a legit health concern, and people that do not wish to be subjected to second hand smoke shouldn't have to avoid businesses so smokers can smoke wherever they choose. The inconvenience should be on the smokers that choose to partake in the unhealthy action.

Just my opinion of course.

smokers are adults, and i dont have a problem stepping on an adult's toes if it is for the betterment of kids. i'm glad i dont have to tell my daughter, "we cant go eat your favorite pizza because grown ups are smoking in there"

I remember 4th grade anti smoking messages as well that said 50,000 people a year die of second hand smoke. Just saying with odds like that I should have gone to at least one funeral of a person who died of second hand smoke by now.

like I say every time this thread comes up, I would never vote for this type of ban as I strongly believe that a private business should be able to do what it wants inside its doors...

...but the selfish part of me grins because I loathe cigarette smoke

Maybe you have, and you just don't realize it.

So I guess you don't think there are legitimate concerns then?

I haven't smoked since July 19th and don't claim to speak for people that do smoke - I'm arguing as a believer in individual liberty and sovereignty of enterprise.

Now, let's entertain this "vocal minority" idea for a second. Do you subscribe to the idea that the loudest voice in the room should always win? Would you invite your local City Council into every facet of your community in order to solve the problems and disputes that rational adults have long been capable of solving sans governmental hand-holding or direction?

When have I forced anyone to do that? I smoke Cigars in my back yard. People are free to come and go as they please. Same with privately owned bars and clubs, people are free to come and go as they please. I feel there should be smoking clubs available for smokers. The market will decide, the nanny state is obnoxious.

Your glee at having smokers squeezed out of public places is juvenile.

But this is a Draconian ban on all smoking in all bars, restaurants, public festivals, private clubs........

it's really kind of crazy.

No, I think life is an inherently dangerous proposition. There are a vast amount of things which are unsafe or have potential health risks. If we legislate all of them (under exact same principal here: public safety) we will wind up squeezing the life out of life.

I dont want to be in a smoky bar or restaurant either, so I just go elsewhere. Most real restaurants that I can think of havent allowed people smoking in them for years. Someone smoking say on the sidewalk outside of Herbsaint while enjoying a glass of rose isnt going to ruin my day. Nor should it ruin yours. Nor should government try and say it is.

Which places the inconvenience on smokers instead of people that don't smoke. That's how it should be.

I have no issues with smokers, not until their decisions directly affect me. If the two options are I stop going to somewhere I like, or smokers have relocate to partake in their chosen activity, it makes the most sense that the smoker be inconvenienced.

How many bars are smoke free? None of the ones I frequent are.

That's not what we are talking about to my knowledge. I have no issue with smoking outside.

If your private hobby/addiction is in my lungs, it's not private.

Go outside and kill yourself.

So I have to be inconvenienced because you can't smoke somewhere where you don't affect others? In what world does that make sense?
