Hoops, thank you and your wife for coming to N.O., spending your hard-earned money while having a great time taking in what the city has to offer. Impossible to do everything in 3 days, but at least you got a taste of it. As you likely found out, N.O. is very laid back and moves at a slower pace. People are friendly (compared to Northern cities) and want you to have a great time. Alcohol, food, and music are the primary "things to do" amongst the locals and visitors.

I shared your same desire to explore a new city 15 years ago. Reached out to my second cousins who live in the Chicago suburbs (Irving Woods, Schiller Woods, Western Dunning area) and have visited the Windy City ten different times to enjoy the food, music, and museum scene. If you ask the locals about WTD, places to visit/eat, and use common sense, you won't become a statistic and get shot in the South Side of Chicago or New Orleans East. Thank you again for visiting, and come back again during one of the cooler months. Both cities are very similar sharing common theme of great music and food.
