I generally follow this simple recipe for boiling crawfish. After I add crawfish to a rolling boil, I usually turn off the heat at the first sign of a mild boil or crawfish floating and then let them soak until they taste good.

For crabs, is the duration of the boil similar? That is, after I add crabs (say 1 to 2 dozen) to a rolling boil, should I just boil until they float and then cut the heat and soak until they drop?

Thanks!

I boil my blue crabs for 10-12 minutes after they return to a boil, then soak for 20 minutes or so.

It’s really that simple. The fullness of the crab will dictate how fast they float and drop, it’s hard to put a time on it. The actual boil time isn’t much different than crawfish

Crabs are hard to screw up as long as they aren’t empty

I’ve done crabs 5 mins, soaked for 15-20 depending on how seasoned you want them

I overseason crabs with both powder and liquid. Full crabs take extra spice in the boil to give them flavor, poor crabs turn out supper spicy, but they aren't worth picking.

Soon as it comes back to a rolling boil I cut it off. Throw in corn, sausage, and mushrooms and let soak 30-45 mins. I have had overcooked crabs before by a neighbor's house. They will get mushy.

If you want them to keep their claws on, ice them into a coma a few minutes before putting into the pot of hot water. You can also put them in the water while it's cool and let them come up to a boil while live and they will keep their claws on

They throw their claws as a survival instinct. If they go straight into hot water, it will happen.

Crabs take longer to cook from every thread I've seen on here. Every post above is pretty much on par with all the advice in those threads. Boil til float, soak til sink.

For, Crabs Crawfish and shrimp, I boil them they float and soak them till they sink. Never had a problem since I went to that method.

Just boiled some yesterday- we catch our own and have boiled crabs 1 - 2 times a week. Rolling boil for 10 minutes, cut thr fire and add corn, wieners, etc and soak for 25 - 30. Fullness of the crab dictate how much seasoning I use. 16 - 24 ounces of liquid boil, depending on how many dozen are in the pot, 1/3 to 1/2 jar of powder seasoning. Lemon and salt to taste. Kept 8 dozen full selects yesterday and went with the 24 ounces of liquid - they were outstanding!

Thanks to all for the advice! One other questIon - Prior to boiling, similar to crawfish, the crabs just need to be rinsed with water in an ice chest until drain water is clear, right?

I ice some crabs prior to boiling to keep claws on, I have never washed them, fresh water would kill them fast

Pretty much exactly how I do it except just 10 minutes on boil, then soak 20 minutes. I just did 5 dozen crabs last Saturday and they turned out great.

Definitely a step that shouldn't be skipped in my opinion. I put bagged ice over mine in the cooler with the drain open and the ice chest slightly tilted so all water can drain easily at least an hour before I boil
