My wife’s father would buy shucked raw oysters from a barrel in the store in Iowa and never had any problems. And they were salt water oysters not Rocky Mountain oysters

Seems like they really can't prove it came from Oysters during one particular meal. 1000s of people eat oysters all summer long raw, if you are very old or in crappy health I think its a bad idea. But if you are in normal health I don't see an issue with it at all. There's risks in everything you do.

Generally not a good idea to eat them in September or October either but that is Gulf Oysters where lots of those in the H-town area are found in the bays. I was always under the impression that Vibrio was the main driver on this since that is more prevalent in warm water in the bays. Probably a non issue for healthy people but those with comprised immunities, it can be deadly. However, most places that serve oysters here will import in East Coat oysters during the Summer.

I took a pathogenic microbiology course when I was at LSU in the early 90's. The professor was Seabring or Seabling or something like that. His Holy Grail was developing a stick test for vibrio vulnificus for oysters to be used at distribution sites. I don't think he succeeded. Dude was a great professor but also a complete nut job. Think he had a brain tumor.

Still wrong. It’s ONLY eat oysters in months with an R. That was the cooler months Sept-April as bacteria is lower.
