I really love the padded envelopes from usps. You can get them online for free. Fits 3 12oz bottles or 16oz cans. Wrap each one in bubble wrap before putting in. Then I use either crumpled newspaper or big air packs to space them out.
Definitely don't use a box that is just big enough for the beers. The times I've had breakage, I packed too tight.

I've never heard this method. Interesting. I always just electrical tape tops, then into a gallon size ziploc (2-3 12 oz bottles/cans per ziploc, or one bomber), then bubble wrap until the labels are a little blurry. Reinforce bottom and sides of box, put a base layer of whatever packing material I have on hand, then all the bottles into a trash bag and into the box. Fill out the box until it's tight with minimal give on the top middle when it's closed. I've never lost a soldier.

I do trade. Mainly through Reddit though. I've had alot of success and easy trades.

I second wine shoppers. Check your local specialty wine store to see if they will sell you their used shoppers. I get 2, 4, or 6 bottle shoppers for just a couple of bucks. If you go to a high volume place, they will only have empty cases, which I don't recommend
