Don Vanuchi is a good beer. Highly recommend it if you ever see it on tap. BA imperial stout that has a nice smoothness to it.

There's just a couple words I don't care to hear in the description of an IPA. That Tin Roof can that says "Malty Session IPA" is another example

I don't mind the word balanced if the beer is actually balanced. It doesn't feel like that is the case most of the time, however.

Agreed. I think the malt used matters as well. I'm afraid I'm not super knowledgeable about the different varieties of malt and their flavor profile, but I know that I've had some IPAs that even when fresh lend a sweetness I don't find particularly pleasing.
