What are some of your cookbooks you own and are your favorite? Old, new, local, regional, ethnic or foreign?

Many years ago I signed up for a cookbook club and purchased cookbooks for a dollar and then would need to buy a few at list price a year. Worked great. Now I am looking for some ideas for cookbooks I may not have or placed to buy cookbooks on the cheap.

Dunno where you’re located, but Blue Cypress used bookstore on Oak St in uptown NOLA has a decent cookbook selection that turns over fairly often. I’ve picked up many gems there in the $5-10 range (usually $8). Owner has a good eye for food books, and carries a few new items of local interest.

Kitchen Witch on Broad St has a pretty large selection of used cookbooks, but the quality varies widely. Mixed in with the terrible 1970s appliance specific cookbooks are some oddities, some regional interest....another problem is that the owners lack a comprehensive inventory, so it’s not the best curated collection in the world.

My favorites are "Talk About Good" and "Talk About Good II" that feature La. cuisine and is heavy in Cajun dishes.

I also have a 2 book set that Julia Child put out and that deals with mostly Classical French Cuisine.

My mom's from SW LA. I got a copy of Pirate's Pantry by the Junior League of Lake Charles. I was amazed to see how much those recipes resembled my mom's style of cooking.

Yeah, the "Talk About Good" books are by the Junior League of Lafayette and are full of amazing recipes of many of the dishes I grew up on with a 100% Cajun grandmother and all her offspring being my mom, aunts and uncles on her side.

Cajun families and Italian families share the same "come in and eat something" attitude.
