dude .. sad to say .. but this is no different than a good, local mom & pop business shuts down because of lowe's or home depot ...

Good Luck Jason, that is a pretty tough location to put a start-up restaurant/seafood store. The quality of the food made it last as long as it did. I was hoping you would grow to become the SE BR Tony's.

I agree. We talked to some other people who owned (in the past) around us and they said they never could get any evening business in this location. The only thing that may change that is the hospital they are building but that won't get completed for 2 or more years.

Jason are you still serving lunch today (Thur)?

It's always a damn shame when good local places that help define the area close down. Especially when there are waits to eat at Olive Garden, Golden Corral, and Joe's Crab Shack.
Thinking the same thing when I read this. It's just a good thing we didn't lose one of our myriad of different McChain restaurants littering this city. I mean, what ever would we do?

The reason this "chains" do well is cause of their location. you put anything in front of the mall, or right off one of the busiest interstates in the nation with a huge sign, you will do well.
in other news... Olive Garden still packin em in...
maybe he should have coughed up more dough on the front end and bought/leased some prime real estate

Could you be just a little bigger prick?

Because his restaurant sells the products he gets for wholesale. His location certainly didn't help but he's on one of the busiest roads in all of Baton Rouge. It's not his fault people in that area would rather drive up the road to Hooters or Whataburger instead of going right down the road to get some good seafood. As whole, I'd say Baton Rouge is just a shitfest when it comes to good seafood in general. He'll do much better if he takes his show to the West Bank.

Fair point.
My thinking is that they succeed because they market to the ignorant masses and are highly succesful and fooling people into thinking they are getting a good deal or a good product.
Heaven forbid someone think for themselves about finding a good local place that might be a quarter of a mile off of the main hwy and doesn't depend on a $50 million marketing stratagy by a corporate headquarters located in Florida.

BTW... I notice Red Lobster still seems to doing pretty good near Lakeview.
sorry couldn't resist
No, I love BR. But you can't tell me it's a mecca for seafood. In Metairie, Kenner, Chalmette, N.O., Gretna, Westwego, Braithwaite, Waggamen, etc. you can go to just about any gas station and get some pretty good seafood. It's just not that way in BR. Hell, even the big seafood restaurants, i.e. Mike Anderson's, Parrains etc, are average at best. The best place up there is Louisiana Lagniappe and maybe Juban's but it's awfully hard to find a po-boy or plate worth a shite.
eta: As for the Red Lobster comment. Is that really shocking? It's not like we don't have shitty eaters down here too. It's just that we have so many other options.

Hey guess what you can get better crawfish in Lafayette than you can in Monroe. Imagine that.

Come on man. Those areas ship seafood all over the world. You can't tell me they can't make a stop 90 miles up the fricking road. Baton Rouge just can't seem to break away from all the other college towns molds I've seen.

stop
well hell know, we know better than to get our seafood at the gas station...
Thats where we get our boudin....

There's no denying that we have our share of chains down here. Especially in the Metairie/Kenner area.

The only problem is that prime real estate is sky high. Rent at some of those places can run $10,000 plus and is hard for a restaurant to start out with that much overhead unless they have financial backing or a loan which is impossible right now.
And we got it for both wholesale and retail. We thought because it's on airline we would have sufficient traffic (which we do) and that it would take a few years to grow our business with the restaurant. But the wholesale went down leaving the restaurant to cover all the overhead. Believe me if we would have known that we would have done things differently. Business is a big risk in general.
