Electric Smoker Recs?

I only cook with charcoal, so this is a little out of my element, but my FIL has asked for a rec on an electric smoker. He doesn't want to fool with charcoal. He's older and by no means a food critic. Just wants something simple to fool around with.

Can someone give me a few recs in the $100-200 range for an electric smoker that is simple to use and not a POS?

Masterbuilt

LINK

I have this exact model and have used it plenty of times over the last two years. It's the closest one I could recommend to your price range. No complaints yet other than the temp probe it comes with is basically useless after a couple of cooks so you'll need another dual probe set up after a while. Other than that I love this smoker and have cranked out some high quality pork butts, briskets, and chickens off this thing.

Masterbuilt without a doubt, their PID temperature control is impressive and precise

If it fits your budget, the 40” is worth spending the extra for. I had the 30” pre-flood and upgraded post flood to the 40”.

I agree with this if you're going to be cooking for a crowd. You can put an entire brisket or a full rack of ribs on one shelf on the 40". On the 30" you'll need to cut it up before the smoke (which isn't a big deal to me to be honest).

I have that model too and I highly recommend it. I also recommend buying a separate remote thermometer. Like you said, the 30" model will require a little trimming of a whole packer brisket, but that is not a big deal.

As someone who has owned masterbuilt and a far better cookshack clone (smokin-it,) my advice is don’t get one. Get a pellet smoker, just as easy, but far better results. Electrics have issues with smoke production, you basically turn masterbuilts into pellet smokers to overcome this issue. Just get a pellet from the start.

Masterbuilts are garbage without AMNPS, defeat the entire point of electric smoking since you still have to babysit the chip loader.

Ya, but a Masterbuilt with the AMNPS is still usually much cheaper than a good pellet smoker.

That and I prefer to specifically tailor the amount of smoke (and be able to cold smoke) which a MES and AMNPS allows me to do.

Took me FOREVER to find a Gen 2.5 MES 40. Finally ran across one when I was at Sams getting a pork shoulder It's pretty much sold out everywhere online.

Make sure it's a Gen 1 or Gen 2.5. Then Gen 2 MES are horrible.

This was going to be my suggestion, but if the ceiling in price is only $200, that's not an option.

If you want to bump up.what you spend, you'll get a much better value with a pellet smoker and it's set it and forget it.
