Easy Tailgate Food Recommendations -- Probably catering

I'm responsible for food this week for about 25-30. It's a new tailgate group this year, and we don't have any group equipment yet (plan to buy a pit and kettle/burner in future years).

Also, I live in Houston and will be driving in late Friday so I can't bring anything already cooked or my own grill or anything.

I know its not the best, but Jambalaya Shoppe seems like it would be pretty easy for me to pick up. I would much rather cook my own, but I don't have the equipment (or experience with that many servings).

Any other ideas?

We ordered a bunch of stuff from Tony's Seafood one year. Catfish fillets, boudin balls, hush puppies. It was great and pretty cost effective honestly. You can pick up saturday morning i believe

I will be doing a pastalaya for a tailgate club, because its damn easy. Being in your shoes, I would pick up jambalaya like you said, call and order some party trays from Maxwells, or get some Canes. Or a combo of the three.

Good question. Probably not anything more than Styrofoam ice chests. That's part of the reason I'm leaning towards Jambalya Shoppe (I know that stuff will stay hot in one of those ice chests for hours).

It will if you're not opening and closing it much and it won't last forever. Maybe you should go for cold dishes. It's going to be hot.

Calvin's chicken salad sandwiches are darn good. Fried chicken works at room temp and even cold, so if there's leftovers, you can ice them when you go into the game and eat that afterward, as well. So would Bergeron's smoked chicken wings.

Mini muffalattas would work as well. I don't know who has those in BR, but Rouse's in Lafayette will make them up for you if that's something you can get on the way. Someone else might know where you can order a platter in BR, though.

don't go with the mini muffalettas from Rouses. had a spread of them at work once and they weren't good at all.

second the fried chicken and/or chicken salad ideas. that plus some bags of chips and maybe a watermelon .. good stuff.

I had the mini muffs after a funeral. Maybe I was hungry, but they served the purpose. They weren't the best muffs I've ever had by miles, but ham, salami, cheese and olive salad on sesame seed bread was good enough.

Haven't had the chicken on focaccia, there. Muffs are the only thing I've eaten from there other than one piece of fried chicken that was okay.

Can't speak for other people, but I know personally at our tailgate we aim for more than just simply filling our bellies with something that "serves the purpose" or is "good enough." I like to have fun and enjoy the tailgate and having good food is a big part of that.

If you're just looking to feed some hungry road workers yeah I could see going with something simple that isn't really very good .. but doesn't seem to fit @ an LSU tailgate, where people take a lot of pride in their food offerings.

Just my opinion.

I agree they aren't good. They skimp on the meat and there bread is really thick

Exactly. Not much meat or olive mix, and that plus the thick bread they were just really dry and kinda bland.

These were made by the Rouse's in Lafayette when it was pretty new. There was plenty of meat and olive salad. Bread wasn't thick compared to the ingredients. In fact, I didn't notice the thickness. What I did notice was that they olive salad started falling off when I took a bite because there was a good bit of it. Maybe since that store had just opened, they were loading them for more business, but they weren't dry or bready. I like them a little warm, so I didn't love them cold or room temp, but they were servicable.

That's Tank's idea for Saturday but of course he will fry his own chicken.

And for the OP, if you get store bought fried chicken or strips for your tailgate, get your fine china and tablecloths together too because that's how Ole Miss rolls. Take thee to the Grove.

My experience must have been a fluke. Sure seemed like a convenient item for a guy who can't bring any equipment or cook for his tailgate, though.

I think C's wife should be on dessert duty she knocked it out the park 2 weeks ago. I'll let her know .. those are pretty easy to whip up.
