Oh well, as I traveled up north this summer, especially in some smaller towns, the nicest restaurants would often have guys in shorts, flops and white wife-beaters. I really draw the line at trying to eat while getting an eyefull of Sasquatch's pit and back hair.

The table next to us at Patois had their 5 year old girl with them.
at Ruth's Friday night a couple walked in with a 2-3 year old and a baby no more than 6mo old. Was a little thrown off because it was 8:30. Kind of late for the kids to be out at dinner, no?

I love the presumptuousness of assuming people who choose to go to a nice/fine dining type restaurant dressed appropriately for the establishment are all being "pretentious."
Seems some folks truly don't get irony.

the act of dressing nicely is not pretentious.
the act of getting your panties in a wad over what other people are wearing, or thinking that a suit is required to resect the food, IS pretentious....or at least petty/lame.
just look presentable and clean, and who gives a shite?

Perhaps. But, I sometimes think it's no less petty/lame (and definitely no less tiresome) than the whole "Hey, look how cool I can be, I just thumb my nose at traditions and societal conventions, and do whatever the hell I want, and if you so much as think for a second there's something wrong with that, you're just a stuffy old fashioned prude."
Both mentalities can be equally grating at times. At least to me.

I think it depends on how you define the evening/outing.
Saturday night our evening was defined by eating an anniversary dinner at Patois. We were dressed to nines, ordered extravagantly (for us), and basically ate and drank until we couldn't move - although we did go to the R Bar to shoot pool dressed the same way, mainly because that's where we ended up parking.
Sunday though was defined by art galleries and bars all over the 1/4. Arnauds was just a breakfast stop, albeit a very expensive one (for us). It was unbearably hot, but I didn't pack a linen get-up for a 3 hour brunch anyway. That wasn't the plan.
Really interested in the OP's input. Did he chant Tiger Bait! to the Bama squad in Arnaud's? Because I think that's ironic in the scheme of this thread.

why are you assuming that someone is trying to thumb their nose at tradition, or make any kind of statement at all?
perhaps they aren't aware of the traditions, or just don't really care enough about them to give them a second thought?
it's ok to make no statement at all, and just be comfortable and presentable.
for me, i am vagualy aware of goobers prancing around playing dress up in Huey Long era suits in parts of the South, but i don't care about it....and certainly won't consider it when choosing what i wear.

I'm not. I'm just pointing out the extremes on both sides of this issue.
Do you deny that there's likely as much of that type of mentality as there is the pretentious "want to look like Huey Long" type mentality?

gotcha.
but i am not talking about an extreme. I am talking about someone who dresses casaully but is presentable and orderly, and is not trying to make a statement by wearing crocs or their new "Creed" tour shirt to commander's.
i'm just thankful that most great young chefs (and many older ones) have finally left the suit and tie idea behind and made it more about the food, drink, and enjoying yourself.

In this brave new world, casual is in. I like it. I hate ties.

Ties--I changed jobs to avoid them.

I don't have to wear them for work, so maybe that's why I'm okay with them.

Required when I first began working, as were slacks, dress shoes, etc. Khakis were considered casual.
