Now that I think about it, Boswell's wife does not look like a slab of hogshead cheese.

It was an old line french restaurant in midtown. The owner was paralyzed with fear that "His customers were dying and he wanted to attract a new clientele." He was also a megalomaniac that cared about nothing else except his own success and ego.

Just out of curiosity, do you find places like Daniel, Per Se, etc. to be in a different ballpark than the best New Orleans has to offer?

I may go up there sometime this fall, so I'm wondering if I should make an effort to try one of those places...

Daniel is one of the most flawless dining experiences I have ever had. Everything in the room seemed to be floating to an unseen rhythym that was not apparent to even the trained naked eye. The only other experiences I have had like this occured in Paris and London. So it is fantastic if not indicative of NYC. Babbo is on the best "NYC" dining experiences I have had. However, The best of New Orleans sits right up there with the best of them because it is as unique to place as any other great restaurants of the world, i.e. it can't be replicated out of geographical context.

Many thanks...and Daniel just happens to be a bit more "reasonable" than Per Se.

There's a part of me that still wants to try Alinea...even with the pillow and scented air.

Unless it is bacon, a restaurant killer for me. Would not even consider patronage, in the same way I advoid shops or stores with potpourri at holiday times.

If aromas are not coming from the kitchen how are they relevent to a dining experience? Maybe from the plate, but an external thing like pillows? Taking it too far IMO.

I agree. I would never go to even brunch at Arnaud's or Commander's in anything less than a suit. Seersucker or white linen.

Seersucker always works in New Orleans in the summer.
