Was just on the site and it seems the next dinner goes on sale today at 10AM. Italian chef from St. Louis.

Sorry to hear this one was disappointing. The menu did look underwhelming, but I was hoping the food would be executed well enough to surpass that.

Where was it held? To me, that is the most exciting part of these.

It was at the Capital Welcome Center on River Road. Very nice place.

I really think if the chicken and dumplings would have been performed better and more filing the dinner would have been above average. This dish was such a flop that it pulled everything else down.

Wow.

I'm so done with my paid membership to Dinner Lab when it expires.

Good Afternoon Diners,

Well as Donald Trump would have it Chef Sölvi was sent back to Iceland for not having the proper work visa. Though this is an incredible bummer, he has given us his blessing to execute the menu as intended. Our very talented chefs will be bringing his recipes to life, and we can't wait to serve them to you.

My best friend is eloping in Iceland in 2 months, so I surprised her with tickets. She was so excited to see an Icelandic chef and try their food.

And hey -- I'm sure the food will be fine. But the e-mail is so obviously a fake bullshite lie. They may as well have been a parent telling their child that Santa had to go back to the North Pole to tend to his reindeer.

I guarantee you that whatever happened, they knew long before now. But they didn't let the diners know. And now that they finally told us a mere day before the event, they worded it in the most casual and unprofessional way (as a friend pointed out to me, using the word "bummer" for something people spent $60-$70/person on?!) and they didn't even deliver a sincere apology. There are people who go to these events to see different chefs do their thing.. yet nowhere on this email is there an option for a "store credit" to be used on a future dinner or an option for a refund. Basically, we were all bait-and-switched.

After the dinner that this thread was originally about, I was mostly fed up. Now.. I don't even know if I want to attend dinners as a free member even when my membership expires.

Agree on both parts. That lame deflection sentence to start off the email is about as unprofessional as you can get.

Im just wondering how long they knew about this.

I noticed on their FB event page for the Icelandic dinner that they took the page down a week ago--well in advance before they announced the chef not being able to attend.

Plus DL layed off 30 employees on January 1st. I wonder if they're going to crash and burn or be able to change up their business model.

Wow. Interesting. Wish I had noticed the dinner being taken down. They must have contemplated canceling it altogether.

What's weird is that every dinner sells out. They're not hurting in that aspect. Maybe it is just more expensive of a business model than people can reasonably afford..?

I mean, I imagine putting these events on with the amount of staff I've seen that they use is pricey since there is no tipping. And that's not even counting the location scout, chef scout, event managers, etc.

I think I saw where they went to contract workers instead of keeping event workers on staff full time.

Dinner Lab supper club laying off 30 workers, website reports

quote:

Dinner Lab, a New Orleans-based company that hosts dinner parties in improvised venues, is laying off 30 full-time employees and will instead contract with workers to produce events, the website TechCrunch.com reported Wednesday (Dec. 23).

CEO Brian Bordainick told Tech Crunch it was too costly to pay employees on a full-time basis for organizing multi-course dinner parties and became difficult to turn a profit.

I've always wondered how they even employed people full time in cities like this where there's one event a month. I doubt a month of work needs to go into this when there's already a person designated to scout locations and the chef is planning his own menu so no work needs to be done there.

I thought the same thing. I have seen the same dark haired lady running both the New Orleans and Baton Rouge events.

They had to have known about it before the email went out. If so, thats kind of crappy to withhold that info. I mean thats the whole reason people are going. You are paying for an out of town chef to come to the dinner and do his/her thing. The dinners arent cheap either. $130 for two people is a good amount of money to go to dinner, especially when some of the menus have been sort of lackluster.

What irks me is the email. The day they found out about the chef not being able to come, they should have sent out an email letting the customers know the situation. Maybe give a discount or let the ticket roll over to the next dinner lab of their choosing. Instead, the email goes out the day before and opens up with a deflection joke about Donald Trump and immigration and says 'bummer'. Oh and the dinner is still on and our dinner lab chefs are going to be preparing the meal. I'm wondering how they are going to address this tonight.

Makes sense and could explain this current ordeal and why nothing was offered to the customers. Cant take the hit
