Credit card surcharging at restaurants?

I understand that merchants or in this case, restaurants have to pay merchant fees to banks for customers that utilize their debit or credit cards. It's part of being a business owner -- and it should be built into their business model, i.e. inclusive. Don't like it, don't accept plastic. But don't be surprised when your business decreases either because of the actions taken.
What are your thoughts on restaurants that add a surcharge to the bill, but don't notify you in advance of the "fee" tacked on?
And what are your thoughts when you ask for an itemized bill, if not given to you -- it is simply a reprint of the total bill that you had already received?
I recently had this happen to me. And while my bill was off "several dollars," I didn't think too much of it ... until it happened to a relative of mine as well and we started putting two and two together.
After discussing our bills, I learned that a surcharge was added to my bill ... and to his bill, because we both paid with our debit cards (assumed it was rang up at a credit card transaction) and likely, many others as well.
This doesn't sit too well with me. Again, it's not the "fee" that bothers me. It's the "why isn't this factored into the overall price of goods you are selling me?" In other words, I don't want to see it. It feels like you are nickel and diming me. But most of all, be transparent with your customers. Notify your customers in advance. Have posted signs on the wall. Let customers know on your menu. Post it on social media. Don't try to hide it until after the fact.
It's a bad image.

Should only be for a credit card.

So you'd rather pay 3% more every time rather than only when you use a credit card? That seems counter-intuitive. I would be thrilled if they only charged me the fee when I actually incur it.

That's kind of garbage, but not the end of the world as long as it's on the ticket.

Another kind of garbage move. Sometimes I need itemized receipts for expenses, but I'm not a dick about it.

I've never once had this happen or seen this happen and between lunch and dinner I probably eat out 6-7 times a week.

dont they have to give you an itemized receipt by law if you ask for one?

I don't know. I didn't make a fuss over it, because we were in a hurry to leave (had to be somewhere) and it was only a couple of dollars (in terms of what I thought my bill should be vs. what it actually was). I believe the young lady helping us was fairly new to the business or at least, she gave us that impression based upon what I observed.
But I thought it would be a good topic of discussion here.

Where have you actually had this happen to you?

I know of small places that charge 50¢ if you put less than $10 on a card.

Yes. My uncle did a 6 month stretch in county for refusing to give itemized receipts.

I've never seen a credit card fee itemized in any receipt at a restaurant, ever. The only places that I've seen doing this are usually shady convenience stores.

I've never seen it at a sit down place, but it would annoy me if it's advertised ahead of time.

Can’t speak to restaurants, but I add the 2.75% card processing surcharge to items sold at my farmers market stand. Bulk of the business is cash, maybe 10% is credit/debit. So cash prices are a tiny bit lower. Most of the vendors at this market only take cash. I’ve had 1-2 customers complain in 2 years of sales. I politely pointed out that the nearest ATM is 1/2 mile away, and I’d be happy to take their cash when they got back.
Both prices are clearly marked on all signage, so someone who is bothered by the up charge is free to buy elsewhere.

You pay processing fee on credit and debit. Might be different rate, but it's not just for credit cards.
