Do you guys typically just trade beers with people from other areas, or do you have a guy you know who makes trips to places and comes back and sells?

Clearly not looking for a pipeline here, but me and a friend of mine were debating about whether a market exists where people would pay an upcharge for desirable craft beers if they know they can't get them via trade. I said that people would absolutely pay more to get their hands on a good beer, but he disagreed. I think he underestimates just how much money people sink into this, myself included. I don't bat an eye at the cost of a beer if I want it bad enough. Obviously transporting beer and re-selling is illegal, but surely this happens, right?

What do you guys think?

How are they able to do that on eBay legally though?

I am sure it’s a gray area and EBay does not catch it. Just an example, there are several beer websites that allow you to buy or bid on beer.,

I think EBay is on the higher end as far as price so that is why I sent that example.

So I take it calling it a "collectible" is how this is allowed. Interesting. Some of the prices on those sites are much more ridiculous than I imagined someone would sell a beer for .

Yes, there is a secondary market for beer. It's largely associated with social media.

Without question, people will pay absurd amounts of money to get beer that they otherwise could not get via trade.

I'm heading to Toppling at the end of the month for their Assassin release. On the "black market," I could get anywhere between $500-$800 for the two 22 oz. bottles that I'll purchase for $100.

I recently-posted a Goose Island Prop on Instagram and some guy sent me a DM saying he'd pay $300 for the other that I got at Prop Day last November. I got two bottles of Prop and Reserve for $70 total.

I've never sold beer, personally. I like the idea of buying it to drink and share with friends.

wow. That's kinda where our conversation started. Another friend of mine living in Brooklyn did a little road trip and hit Treehouse and send me a dozen or so of their beers. So I told my buddy that I wonder if I could just road trip around and come back to sell beer and basically pay for my trips. Nothing for extreme profit, but just to cover costs of travel and drinking.

I guess if you hit the right releases then that's entirely feasible.

I know next to nothing about craft beers or how trades work but how could anyone think that secondary beer sales don’t happen?

You could fill up a U-haul full of Treehouse brews and have them sold before you got back to NOLA at $10/can.

Holy shite, I've never heard of Assassin. What is so special about that beer to warrant a 50 dollar bomber?

When I visit my parents, which isn't more than every couple months, I'll try getting to Other Half for a release. I've talked with a couple "small" groups in line that leave with massive hauls. They'll be trading most of the time, but there are a few leftover packs that they sell on websites for $35, or something, not including shipping.

Not a crazy profit, but enough for their time, I guess.

Craft beer has turned into a microcosm of the Fear Of Missing Out phenomenon. I got caught up in it for a while doing beer trades with friends in other areas of the country, and I slowly started to realize there were plenty of great beers readily available to me to keep me satisfied. Shipping costs were getting pricey, and so many trips to the post office were becoming a drag.

I did samples some really excellent beers - Heady Topper, Sips of Sunshine, some from The Veil, some 3 Floyds stuff, brewery only releases from Bell's and Founder's, and many others. In the end it was just too much hassle.

Can't imagine paying black market prices for any of those beers I tried.

Probably isn't worth $50 to begin with. Honestly, I don't have an answer, but I like it. That said, I put it safely behind KBBS and Mornin' Delight for limited beers by Toppling.
