Does anyone have or know of a good Coffee Maker and Grinder that wont break the bank?
Or is the better route to buy a nice coffee maker and buy a grinder separate?
Its for a Christmas gift

Because I want a regular coffee maker. This is a gift for someone and I know for a fact they'd rather a regular coffee maker and not a coffee plunger

you can get a nice Cuisinart coffee maker for less than $100 bucks. that's what I have, plus a Braun coffee mill and spice grinder that I've had for years .. they cost about 20 dollars.

I use a keurig for my every day cup because I've gotten lazy at 5 am.
I also have one of these( LINK) which makes a great cup of strong coffee.
BUT, to answer the question. I've owned 4 cuisinarts and while they made a decent cup, they all developed leaks in a short period of time.
I've tried numerous other brands and the unit that lasted the longest and still made a good cup was Bunn ( LINK. The unit I had was commercial but I don't imagine there is much difference in the final product.

I have a Cuisinart that grinds and brews. This one has lasted for about 12 years or so. Still going strong.

Honestly a $12 coffee pot will do the same thing as $120 one, it's all about what looks acceptable on your counter. Now grinders...the $20 ones are the suck and it's better just to get ground coffee and buy it often. Coffee needs to be ground using a burr grinder so all of the pieces are the same size, whether course or fine. The blade grinders make powder, fine and course all at the same time. Not good (ETA2:the powder can make the extraction bitter while the course may get poorly extracted).
I use one of those gold filters which come with most coffee makers and I think it's perfect for a bold cup, as it leaves the oils and such. I've been pressing my grounds into it to try and slow down the drip process. May be placebo, who knows?
I'd rather a $1000 espresso machine, but I just go buy a nice quad-shot when I have the time.
ETA: Our Cuisenart grinder/brewer is a brick in the bottom of our pantry - stopped working after some time.

quote:Perhaps a fantastic $12 pot and a shitfest $120 pot, but not generally. Typically the $12 pots don't get to ideal temperature.

Ideal is just under boiling right? I let my 'boiling' water sit for a second before I add it to my press, generally the time it takes to measure out my coffee.
I figure they use the boiling process to drive the water up the column to the drip plate and in that the water at the top is a bit less than boiling once it's passed through. Hard to believe it's still boiling. IDK, I can make a good cup with any CLEAN coffee maker.

I had Krups ones before the Cuisinart, each (3) lasted one year and broke.

If you want a good coffee maker that is cheap got a FRENCH PRESS. If you don't want to gift that then get a drip coffee maker but get one with the brass permanent filter. Nothing is worse than a paper filter.
As for grinders.....Get a burr grinder, this allows you to vary the grind size from fine to coarse. Do not get the little spice grinders that have rotating blades. They are junk.
ETA: this should do everything you need in a grinder... LINK
