I ate a Cochon's tonight for the first time to try it before it closes. The location and atmosphere are fantastic. My food was disappointing...

It had little to do with the food but moreso with UL-Lafayette people not sure if they wanted to patronize a potentially pro-LSU establishment in Lafayette.
Brandon and Jack may be LSU graduates but they're not stupid and made it as much red/white as purple/gold and even sponsor the football coach's show during the season.

Honest question. I know Katrina was 7 1/2 years ago, but I stayed in Opelousas during the evacuation and went to Laffy a lot. Can someone tell me what upscale/fine dining restaurants are really legit? Just curious. Or is the city's strength really in basic cajun cuisine? I found a couple of good places to eat, but I never found anything that were stellar. Not trying to be an a-hole. I'm genuinely curious.

Where did you go. There are to many great restaurants to pick IMO.

I really am drawing a blank on the names. I do remember some Italian place in a small shopping center with a connected "hip" cocktail lounge that was supposed to be a big deal (maybe I'm hallucinating . ..

The owner was the sous chef for the guy who owns Stella!
Check that place out next time you stop by.

it is is not for NOLA. And for this, I am glad.
tourist. Not every person living in New Orleans is some major foodie who will eat out every night of the week. I know there are more there than BR or Laff, but that city needs the convention or sports tourist big time.

Why not explain your answer instead of doing that laugh thing? It's moronic to just post and emoticon when you clearly have a response.
And, they suck. Sorry you haven't had a quality (or average) margarita before.

Cochon Lafayette was founded by Donald Link and Stephen Stryjewski, both James Beard-award winning chefs who had a lot of success with New Orleans restaurants. Link announced this week he was closing the Lafayette restaurant to focus on his Crescent City properties.
Rodrigue praised Link and Stryjewski, but said Cochon Lafayette’s menu was “so eclectic and so upscale.”
“There was no steak or fish on the menu,” he said.
Speaks volumes, I guess.

Sounds like you went to Bella Figura (where Marcello's is now), and the "hip" cocktail lounge next door was Bella Notte.

That's it. Again we're talking almost eight years ago. The guy running the place was friendly and I ate there twice. The food was okay, if I remember correctly.

Well no shite. Not everybody in nola is a foodie, But NOLA tourists cant support the amount of foodie restaurants scattered through out the town either.
NOLA is a food/drink city.
I hate the word foodie btw

Well it's not an upscale scene there
They like traditional cajun because that's where the cuisine originated
It is what it is but they don't place value on the stuff that Link puts out.

Also, I forget who, but there was some guy who had lived in Laffy for years who basically predicted this happening.
He said Cochon couldn't make it in Lafayette with their prices. Said most of the stuff on the menu can be had for half price elsewhere in town.
