If he already has a grill (I know it's propane) then why would he buy a kettle if he is only looking to smoke with it?

Valid point. It was given based on the point that he didn't want to spend a lot of money.

But I'd see the added versatility of charcoal grilling as a plus as well.

What are some decent smokers?

18 or 22 inch Weber Smokey Mountain.

You will have more room to smoke on a WSM than you will a Weber Kettle.

Agreed, but a premium 22" Weber Kettle is $165, where as a WSM 22" is $439. So you'd really need to ask yourself how often you will be using all of that space if you're trying to be cost conscious.

ETA: If you do decide you want the extra space - I'd look at used deals. FB marketplace or CL has gems every now and then.

Stalk FB marketplace for good deals on the Webers. I bought all three of mine from there, and all brand new.

Weber Premium $100
Weber Performer $150
Weber Smokey Mountain $100

People get these as gifts and never use them and sell them a year or two later it seems...I wouldnt hesitate to buy a used one in good condition though, they are bullet proof

This. I haven't bought a new Weber in over 15 years (gas or charcoal). I'm still own the lookout for a 18 or 22" WSM.

I use my Weber Performer with a Smokenator (pre SNS) way more than I use my Brinkman Gourmet smoker. Easier to clean and has a prep table.
