I may be old school, but the best cast irons to me are the really old used ones. Especially if they came from a family member.

If you dont have one from within your own family, I would look at yard sales and on Facebook marketplace.

Even if it's a little rusty, they are easy to restore with a little elbow grease.

Outside of the great food, part of the fun of cooking with them is that it's a piece of cookware that has stood the test of time.

I have about 6 total, some from my mom and a few that I actually just found left in a old apartment and I restored.

Ones a Wagner, most of the others just have the size number on the bottom. So who knows with them.

Most old cast irons are going to be good quality. Dont get hung up on the name if you are just wanting to cook with them. (I.E. dont want them as some type of display piece).

The key with them is learning how to season and care for them. (Mainly just oiling them).

Cool, I have cast iron pot we use sometimes. It was my wifes grandmothers.

It was in rough shape (pretty rusty) and I restored it to great working condition.

They are all over Facebook marketplace in the 10-15 dollar range.

Restoration just involves scrubbing it with a SOS pad to get the rust off. Then applying oil and baking it, then more oil, bake again. Etc. Then start cooking more and more with it.

I have several pieces old and new. Some new lodges that I have grinded and sanded down then reseasoned from scratch.
Others older antiques that cook like a dream.

I have been looking at the stargazer and field skillets on YouTube reviews lately and I’m tempted to buy one of those high end pans with the starting glass smooth finish.
Was wondering if anyone here had either of those two specifically as I can’t decide and will only purchase one of them.

Looked at those but ended up with a No. 12 Smithey. Love it, but it’s heavy

I have a field. Got in early when they were just starting. I love it. Very light and. smooth. It seasoned up very easily.

I say this every time, but just take a grinding wheel and some sandpaper bits to a Lodge. You'll still come out ahead even if you have to buy the angle grinder.

I've looked at both of these including a few others. My next purchase will be a Field.

What’s your reasoning for field over stargazer?

Same. I got one through a deal they made with Anova early on and I love it. Light (relatively) and smooth. Can't compare it to Stargazer though, never used one.

Between the Field, a handful of Lodge, and a deep 12" Emeril cast iron I probably won't buy any more unless I can find an old Wagner or Griswold at a garage sale or something like that.

I have the Field #10 and it is a great skillet. It has the same smooth bottom as my antique cast iron cookware.

If I were to buy a good condition Griswald on eBay, or a new field skillet, which is the better choice?
