That is correct. You can season your cast iron with any cooking oil. There are considerations regarding temperature and smoke point and when you heat the skillet or pot, you need to stay with an oil that won't fill your house with smoke, or you will need to in my house because I hate smoking oil smell in my house.
Most of the time, I cook with vegetable oil in my cast iron and I season with it. I showed everyone the proof I have in my house that it works.
I was never saying that olive oil, or bacon fat or lard or vegetable (peanut, sunflower, soybean, whatever) doesn't work.
Honestly, I have never heard of food grade linseed oil, but that isn't important. Wikipedia tells me you can buy it.
I can tell you for certain that if I had vegetable oil, I would not drive a block to buy something else to use to season my cast iron.
IMO, no oil is superior to any other oil or works any better for this task.

pretty much what i've been saying for years on this board.
i could win competitions with how clean i keep my cast iron cookware, and some of it's well over 100 years old

Hea, I keep me pretty clean and I'm almost 100 years old.

I'm a simple kind of guy. My cast iron stays nearly perfect and I do almost nothing to it.
I'm going to whisper so that no one else can hear. I have on occasion used soap on mine and still keep it nearly perfect as the photos show.
It just isn't that difficult to do. Maybe I'm blessed with old guy luck, but from my lottery winnings, that doesn't seem likely.

I saw this in a Food Board post a while back and tried it, and it works well. Food grade linseed = flaxseed oil, or so this article says. You can buy it at Walmart or online.
And that said, I've used all types of oil and get similar results.

I clean mine with soap and hot water all the time I just don't scrub the hell out of them....

Season it. Wipe with oil, store greasy, use again, and follow the same procedure.

Hey heypaul, sounds like you dabble in collecting like me. Check out what I picked up the other day:

I only use soap on mine when something really gets caked on there... otherwise it's just oil and salt.
