I understand how to clean and care for them, but what should I buy for my first set? Looking to see what sizes and cast iron pieces are a must have for a set.

Don’t buy a set. One 10” or 12” skillet and a 5 qt Dutch oven is plenty.

I’m going to get a 3.5 quart Dutch oven where the lid doubles as a shallow skillet. I already have a couple of large skillets and small skillets.

Lodge is a good brand

Cheap sturdy dependable

Their pretty easy to car for.

Try and scrub it with water while still hot. Dry well.

Coat with a little out and heat up back up to dry.

I'm fortunate to have old family hand me downs for all my cast iron. When my niece wanted a good corn bread skillet, my mom insisted on getting her an old skillet. I took my mom to an antique store and she bought one for $5 and gave it to my niece. If you have the time, I'd look for the same.

Two suggestions, there are several antique stores in your area, you can find some old and well seasoned cast iron pots in those stores, 2nd look on eBay, you can find the same there. You’ll pay more for these old seasoned pots, but you don’t have to start from scratch when you buy a new one

At Home Depot yesterday picking up a few things I saw they have in the main front isle a selection of cooking type gifts for sale. Included was a 3 piece set of seasoned cast iron frying pans for $19.99. Looked like decent pans.

I have:
8”- I use very little to non existent
10”- little use, more for corn bread or quick apple pie
12”- I use often
15” I use couple of times a week

10 Qt Dutch oven- I use often during week
20 Qt Dutch oven- I use often on weekends and big cooks

I need something bigger than a 10qt and something smaller than a 20qt. I’m thinking 14qt. I also want some flat cast iron.

10" skillet
12" skillet
5 qt dutch oven

That's the basics.

Larger dutch oven if you cook for big groups.

Lodge is fine for a new starter pack. As mentioned though, older cast iron is generally preferred as it is often smoother and lighter.

i have plenty cast iron as many mentioned above.

Recently added the Cajun Classic purple and gold porcelain coated cast iron 12 quart pot and I love it. Bought from Shopper's Value (old Winn Dixie) in Walker and was a good price.

I have a skillet that's an "Acadian" something or other. I like using it a lot more after I got a crisbee puck. Makes use and care a lot easier for me.
