What the hell are you talking about...have you been down here since SDT took over clean up after the storm??? You obviously have not.

Been down there quite a few times as a matter of fact. My wifes grandmother lives on Royal in the quater. We were down there for 3 nights for the BCS game. I love New Orleans, but no matter how much they clean, there will always be a "stinch" downtown. It was like that way before the storm, so it has nothing to with Katrina.
As far being a "chain lover". I think there are many chains that can be great. Better than plenty of family owned places I have been to as a matter of fact. It's all opinion. Just like I think New Orleans is way overrated when it comes to food.

You mean to tell me that it smelled a block off of Bourbon when there were a million drunken LSU and Ohio State drinking and littering on the second most crowded weekend of the year behind Mardi Gras???? How is that possible...I dont believe you.

You just stated exactly what is wrong with the culinary state of America.

Chain food should not be the norm.

Also, given BR's proximity to cities with great culinary traditions and great fresh ingredients all around us...there is no excuse for that.

It's not as if there aren't plenty of options in BR that aren't chains though.

A lot of places originated in Louisiana. Want me to make a nice little list for you?

Not just Bourbon, no matter where I'm at downtown.
Maybe it's just me

I'm not into giving you recs

I'm trying to convince you that there are plenty of non chain places to eat in BR. There are chains also. If you don't like them then don't eat there. I don't see why you have to get bent out of shape because chain restaurants have success in Baton Rouge.

I think that its sad that an hour up the road most people will tell you that PF Changs is the best chinese or that Jason's is a real deli, etc etc.

The food scene in BR is acceptable, nothing more.

There are plenty chains there because people's food tastes are not refined.

We have hashed through this before...the city lacks adventurous, chef owned places like Stella, Iris, Dick and Jenny's, TOmmy's, Irene's, Brigsten's...the list goes on.

BR should want places like this, but they would seem to prefer waiting in line for Ruby Tuesday's.

OK this is a short list of restaurants in BR that are either exclusive to Louisiana (most on the list are exclusive to Baton Rouge) or originated in Louisiana. I’m sure I left dozens off the list. If you want non chain food in Baton Rouge and can’t find it, then you’re clearly a moron.
Ralph and Kacoo’s
Mike Anderson’s
Chimes – 2 locations
Copeland’s
Hello Sushi
Ruffino’s
Ruth’s Chris
Juban’s
Mansur’s
Louisiana Lagniappe
Cane’s
Heads and Tails
Atcha’s café
India’s
Himalayas
Bay Leaf
Dagastino’s
Little Village
Digullio Bros.
Superior
La Carretta
La Taqueria
Great Wall
Parrin’s
Drusilla Seafood
Padnuh’s
Riverside Patty
Gino’s
Nino’s (I’ve been there once and will never go again FWIW)
Sammy’s
George’s
12 billion other burger joints that are local
Fricken Chicken
Several other sushi places
There are a couple Vietnamese places as well as some local Chinese

You wont. From what I see this guy wets his pants with excitement to come here and bash BR every time someone posts about any restaurant there.

Quoting the guy "because BR is between two culinary towns blah blah blah". NO and Metarie have their share of chains and Lafayette sure as hell has a ton of them.

The problem with Chinese food is it's just not very good. P.F. Chang's isn't authentic but it's decent food.

It's above average.

They have plenty of chains in most big cities. It doesn't mean that there is a problem with the population. The lack of locally owned restaurants has more to do with people not wanting to take risks. And as I've demonstrated there are plenty of locally owned and operated eateries in Baton Rouge.

I agree. More of that would be a good thing.

Well if that's your contention then it's a problem of affordability more than it is being refined. I'd imagine some of the restaurants you mentioned would thrive in Baton Rouge if they only took the risk to open up a location.

I disagree that BR food is average. It is way above average on a national scale. However when compared to NOLA, NY, SF, Chi and other big cities how can it remotely compete? There is not enough tourism here and the best food is still cooked at home in BR. Now for Chinese BR did have a place that was better than Five Happiness but they sold out. The thing about BR is that I find many of its own residents dont know where the good places are at so they go to a chain. Some chains are good some are only good to fill your stomach when you dont feel like cookin.

I don't want to get in the culinary war, but I want to put my two cents in about the smell in the French Quarter.

It was awful Saturday night at 6:30 as we walked from the Royal Sonesta to Antoine's. Then again on Sunday morning around 10 as we walked around the quarter it was still awful. Not only the putrid smell, but the smell of strong pine-sol on a couple of blocks. We even saw 3 employees from SDT cleaning up. I don't think it is possible to wash away the nasty smell.

there are plenty of family/chef owned places that are complete and utter shite fwiw.

Chains are a just part of the deal in Dining that you have to live with. And in a pinch there are some that are consistent and enjoyable. yeah it would be great if every city had a resteraunt scene like some of the best cities in the country, but that's just not how shite works.
