I disagree with that statement. Food had no or very little taste. And the service did suck for me also.

They had a chance... too many other places to spend my money to take another chance and hope it gets better.

man .. i gotta say .. i've seen a lot of posts in my time on here .. but you really nailed it with that one ... "generation why?" .. BOOM .. if it can't be done on an x-box 360, ps3, or laptop .. they ain't gonna do it ... you know, i know that this is the F&D board .. but you wonder how truly intellegent these kids are going to be too ... when i was in school you had to do the work, go to the library, do the research, do the homework, etc. .. now they are googling answers .. how dependent will generation why be on the internet for their brains will be the next challenge .. you can forget manual labor .. today's 18, 19, and 20 year olds literally freak out when they sweat ..

you are having to pay all of those douches salaries

For the record, in this state tipped employees are paid $2.13 an hour. As the federal minimum wage has increased steadily over the years, this rate has remained stagnant. This pittance has a negligible impact on what you have to pay for a bowl of pasta or filet mignon. You obviously had a bad experience at this restaurant, but your rant shows a thorough lack of understanding of the service industry and the modern restaurant system. When "swarm service" is done correctly, it is amazingly efficient and quite impressive as it greatly increases the speed of service and delivery of product. The downside is that when this service style is not executed correctly, it more resembles a kicked over ant pile.

And “douches”? Really? Wait staff is predominately just a bunch of college students with part time jobs. Maybe they aren’t that good at what they do, but they’re trying. And at least they’re working. Is it really worth getting that upset over one meal you will have out of the thousands you’ll have in your lifetime?

funny, i noticed a sign on the door of cafe americain on jones creek yesterday that said "wait staff positions available $3.50/hr. plus tips, so that is obviously going up and getting competitive ..

quote:

once again .. no .. varies from place to place ..

quote:

This pittance has a negligible impact on what you have to pay for a bowl of pasta or filet mignon.

if you are going to tell me that labor costs have nothing to do with what i "pay for a bowl of pasta" i have a really nice tract of ocean front land i'd love to sell you in new mexico ..

also, if the douches that aren't waiting tables, but just running drinks, running food, seating people, etc. are sitting there working for your so called $2.13 an hour plus tips, they are morons ..

quote:

but your rant shows a thorough lack of understanding of the service industry and the modern restaurant system

no , i waited tables in college if you could read .. i have a VERY good understanding of the service industry and am a GOOD customer of your "modern restaurant system" .. i eat out three or four times a week and can tell you that the majority of the time it DOES NOT WORK .. this isn't the west coast offense .. it is taking an order, bringing drinks, bringing appetizers, bringing food, and then collecting money .. what kind of a detailed "system" do you need to do that ?? for every 10 times i eat out (and i go to a variety of places), 6 of them appetizers come out and then food comes out 2 minutes later .. it is CHRONIC .. i worked in your magical industry that you thin skinned freaks seem to think is a special NASA secret fraternity at a time when you didn't have swarm service and the wait person handled basically everything .. and you know what ?? this shite didn't happen .. bottom line .. it is common sense and work ethic, something that today's 18 to 25 year olds lack both of and it is only going to get worse ..

quote:

When "swarm service" is done correctly, it is amazingly efficient and quite impressive as it greatly increases the speed of service and delivery of product.

i rarely see "swarm service" work .. do i blame this on the head coach or the offensive coordinator ?? the only places i see it work at are upper end places .. and for the money you pay to eat there .. it better work ..

quote:

The downside is that when this service style is not executed correctly, it more resembles a kicked over ant pile

which it does the majority of the time ..

quote:

And “douches”? Really? Wait staff is predominately just a bunch of college students with part time jobs

and they treat the jobs like part time jobs .. and yes, it is the dwindling work ethic and common sense of today's college kids that are choking the industry ..

quote:

Maybe they aren’t that good at what they do, but they’re trying

i'd hate to see what the performance would be if they weren't trying ..

quote:

And at least they’re working.

that is a sad statement that stands alone without a response ..

quote:

Is it really worth getting that upset over one meal you will have out of the thousands you’ll have in your lifetime?

one meal ?? one meal ?? did you really just say one meal ?? no .. once again .. try chronically the majority of the meals i have eaten over the last couple of years ..

Wow! Three fifty and hour! Do you hear that? That is the sound of people quitting their jobs all over Baton Rouge to scoop up that opportunity!

My first restaurant job was in 1992. My hourly wage was $2.125. Two years later it skyrocketed to $2.13 where it has remained in this to this day (in this state, at least). If a business chooses to pay their employees more, then that is certainly their right, but don't think for a moment that this is the prevailing wage.

I never made this claim. I was referring to your misinformed statement regarding front of the houses wages. Labor costs are, of course, a huge factor.

And are we talking Pacific or Gulf ocean property. Baja would be great. You can make $3.50 an hour there and have a good life. Oh, NEW Mexico? Is funny because New Mexico is landlocked. Hilarious.

i worked in your magical industry that you thin skinned freaks seem to think is a special NASA secret fraternity

Defensive much? You must have gotten fired from your job at the Big Boy, and it has sullied your entire world view.

Pet peeve #488:

If something is needless to say then it is simply needless-to-say. It ranks up with people who use "it goes without saying..." Then don't say it.

If something I did made me this miserable, this angry, I would consider perhaps stopping. Order take-out. Take a cooking class. Find somewhere that has consistent good service and frequent there. On one hand you have a very valid point regarding level of service. I demand a high level of service myself, but on the other hand life is too short to get angry over some eighteen year old bringing your pizza before your spring rolls.

what do you want ? $12 an hour plus tips ? when it was waiting tables i made $1.95 an hour plus tips .. so the frick what .. that was in response to your, "we only make $2.12 an hour" bullshite .. that is the way the wait staff has, is, and will always be compensated, generation why-er ... i accepted it .. i knew that was how i was going to be going in and knew i just had to bust my arse .. a concept that is obviously foreign to your generation .. "oh, hand me $12 an hour to sit on my arse and stare at a room full of empty glasses with customers looking at their watches and tapping their feet .. and then you better damn well fricking give me my 20% tip on top of that because i damn well deserve it because i had to crawl out of bed today .... oops, sorry, gotta run .. my cellphone's ringing .."

quote:

If a business chooses to pay their employees more, then that is certainly their right, but don't think for a moment that this is the prevailing wage.

exactly what about this conversation aren't you understanding ? THIS IS HOW YOU ARE COMPENSATED AT A RESTAURANT .. if you don't like it, get another job .. you are not going to be paid the same as a welder and get tipped ..

quote:

I never made this claim. I was referring to your misinformed statement regarding front of the houses wages. Labor costs are, of course, a huge factor.

no .. you clearly said that what a restaurant was paying the douches standing around with their thumbs up their asses had little or nothing to with the cost of my bowl of pasta .. i think that would be labor cost ..

quote:

And are we talking Pacific or Gulf ocean property. Baja would be great. You can make $3.50 and hour there and have a good life.

of course, maybe you are not understanding the new mexico joke .. i won't explain it .. and here you go again with your $3.50 an hour whining .. is there any particular reason that you are leaving the PLUS TIPS part out of that figure ?

quote:

Defensive much? You must have gotten fired from your job at the Big Boy, and it has sullied your entire world view.

nah .. not a defensive thing .. everytime a thread is started about how fricking lazy kids are working in restaurants today, this secret cult of restaurant staffers seem to come out of the woodwork with this "all customers are idiots and we can easily survive without them" mentality .. the restaurant biz IS NOT rocket science .. it is just like any other retail business .. you take care of your customers and treat them right .. you will survive and eventually thrive .. if you frick them over, they go down the street ..

actually, i was pretty good at my job .. did it for three years many moons ago before your "swarm service" bullshite .. but i am from a generation that actually works .. once again, a foreign concept ..

quote:

If something is needless to say then it is simply needless-to-say. It ranks up with people who use "it goes without saying..." Then don't say it.

no .. thumping your chest about people that are actually "working" is apparently the new anthem of generation why? ..

quote:

If something I did made me this miserable, this angry, I would consider perhaps stopping

nope, just find other places ..

quote:

Find somewhere that has consistent good service and frequent there

see above ..

quote:

On one hand you have a very valid point regarding level of service. I demand a high level of service myself, but on the other hand life is too short to get angry over some eighteen year old bringing your pizza before your spring rolls.

my expectations for the level of service is commensurate with the prices i am paying on a menu .. no, i don't expect wonderful service at godfather's .. at kona grill .. where i am going to plunk down close to $100 .. yes, i expect outstanding service .. i am going out to eat for a reason .. i WANT to be waited on that particular evening .. i DO NOT feel like cooking that night .. i DO NOT want to wash dishes that night .. trust me, on that particular evening, if i wanted to cook, i would .. i could easily prepare that $100 meal for $30 in my kitchen .. so, yes, i want something for the additional $70 i am paying YOU to wait on ME ..

no, you are absolutely right .. there are plenty of exceptions out there and i frequent the exceptions .. there are still pockets of kids that were raised right by their parents that instilled a work ethic in them ...

Slow down when you read so you can actually understand what the words really mean. I never claimed wait staff makes $2.13 an hour. Their federally mandated wage is $2.13 an hour. Now breathe.

After wiki-ing the term “Generation Why,” I would like to state for the record that I do not fall within that particular generational description. I have no idea of your age, but you rant like a bitter old man who likes nothing to do but complain about how easy kids have it these days, how today’s music sounds like nothing but noise, and how expensive everything is now. Now breathe again.

quote:

No, that would be called sarcasm. Sure it’s the lowest form of wit, but that’s what it is. And I have no problem with that pathetic excuse for a wage (aside from the principle), but I just wanted to set the record straight. There are a lot of people out there less enlightened than you and me that think front of house employees are paid just oodles of money, and they use this misconception to justify low or nonexistent tipping practices. Exhale. Inhale.

quote:

you take care of your customers and treat them right .. you will survive and eventually thrive .. if you frick them over, they go down the street ..

Truer words were never spoken.

Now as much as I appreciate your passion and enthusiasm, wasn’t this a thread about BJ’s? What is it about that particular place that just grinds everyone’s gears? No one rants like this on the Applebee’s post.
