Get your wife's hair dryer and crank it up right at the bottom vent.

Well it was definitely something with some of the charcoal. After about 2 hours pegging out at 225, the temperature started to regulate as normal. Lucky I was watching it so I was able to catch it before it rose too quickly.

that's weird. i've used a lot of different charcoals in my BGE....some that sucked, but never had that problem.

Top Vent open?

Lump charcoal one inch above the holes in the fire box?

Put a paraffin lighter stick in it and should be at 500 in 15 min. All vents open top and bottom.

Try Royal Oak lump, it's the same company that makes BGE charcoal.
