How serious of a scotch drinker are you? $50 will get you a lot more options.
Easy drinking: dalwhinnie, oban
Sherry finish: balvenie 12, macallan 12, aberlour
Really smokey: laphroaig 10 and bunnahabhain 12 year

Just starting with Scotch. I've always been a whiskey drinker and I'm acquiring a taste for scotch now. Unfortunately, I just stared Grad school and am on a budget again. But we can go to $50

If he can splurge another $10. Or just shop at somewhere cheaper than Winn-Dixie

Last one I bought was $47 at Calandros.

Macallan 12
If you get on a really tight budget Famous Grouse or Black Bottle. Both are very good for the money.

I love black bottle for a cheaper scotch, but for someone new to the field it may be a bit much. It's all Islay malt blends and reminisces of a heavier smoke/peat flavor that can be overwhelming.

Or once you get your Scotch feet on the ground go for the Black Grouse.

Highland Park 12, easy choice for me.

Balvenie Doublewood(12 years young) aged in oak for six, and in a sherry cask for six. You will slap yourself silly. Pour into a glass and use three ice cubes to chill it. The ice cubes will not adulterate it, and it will be close to room temp in Scotland.
I brought a bottle into the Chimes ages ago and introduced Tim Hood(owner) and scotch afficiando to it, he has made serios dinero for over 15 years off that meeting.
