Anyone have a few recommendations on the best seafood and steak options in the Greater Birmingham area?

We are traveling there on business and have food and drink allowances, hoping to find a seafood option for one night and a steak option for another.

Also, where is the best place to find some good bourbon?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Big Whiskey in Hoover has the best bourbon selections.

Depends on what you want to eat. I like Highlands, Satterfields and Perry’s. If you like Italian, Amore is solid as hell.

Satterfields is in Cahaba Heights. Foodbar is almost across the street and used to be great.

Perry’s pork chop is worth the trip. Some really cool places downtown but I was just giving you a few within a couple exits of Hoover.

Don't know much in the Hoover area. Bham though, if you are looking for more of a pure steakhouse Perry's is very good. It is a chain, but you won't be disappointed there. Their porkchop is phenomenal.

Highlands and Bottega are two of the better restaurants in town. Gianmarcos is my personal favorite bang for your buck. Great Italian place that has a dynamite ribeye. Hard to get reservations for though.

Couple of other spots that are really good just in general:

Bamboo on 2nd - Sushi. They do seatings at I believe 5:30, 7, and 8:45 or something like that. You can call and try and get a reservations.

El Barrio - Mexican/Southern fusion. Really good place. Their chorizo queso is phenomenal, as is the chorizo meatloaf.

Automatic Seafood - probably best seafood joint in town currently.

East/West - Asian fusion.

All great recommendations. There aren't any places off the top of my head that are known for great seafood. But plenty of good steak places. The Village Tavern if you find yourself near the Summit, they have a great Prime Rib and a good hot Crab dip appetizer. Seasons 52 is also good at the Summit. More of a variety and farm to table type place, but it has been great every time I've been.

There's also a new liquor store in Vestavia, on highway 31 in the Publix shopping center behind the City Center. Hilltop. Went there the other day, good selection and decent prices. That can be hard to find sometimes since the ABC (the state) controls liquor sales. Best prices will always be at the ABC stores, and there is one right outside of the Galleria/Home Depot area that is one of the upscale ABC stores. Most of the local places put a good markup on it, and make their money by being open later than the state stores or open on Sundays when the state stores are closed.

If you want downtown recs, let me know. My office is down there. Bistro 218 is a good one, along with Highlands already mentioned on the Southside. Also several of the local breweries are downtown. Good People, TrimTab, etc.

That’s a great start, definitely hitting Perry’s 1 night.

May try out some downtown after, no telling where we end up, especially if bourbon is involved.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

We may just skip the seafood altogether and hit steak and breweries.

Thanks

Bham has a few good seafood spots, but you aren't going to miss out on anything by not doing seafood. There are much better places to go in Bham. Seafood would generally be down on my list to take people.

Is Highlands even open? Bottega has seating under the tent on the patio, but not inside. Also has curbside. Gianmarco's is probably the best going if you want inside, dining room experience.

For seafood, Automatic (is open and seating inside), and Ocean (not sure of status).

Perry's is definitely the best traditional steakhouse in town, but the best steak in town is the Steak and Frites at Chez Fon Fon. Perry's does also have a pretty good bourbon list. They had Pappy one time I was there, but they wanted like $60 a pour. They also have an awesome happy hour bar menu. Everyone raves about the pork chop, and it is good, but it's just so excessive to me. Can anyone even eat that entire thing? The bar has pork chop bites that are the same thing in a much smaller portion.

Best seafood is Automatic Seafood. I thought it was on the $$$$ end for what we got, but the service was great and the food was well done so just a minor complaint. I would definitely go back.

I've been told Cafe Dupont has an excellent steak, but they regularly change their menu and steak wasn't on the menu the one time I went. It's excellent though.

Cafe Dupont does have a good one, but if you felt like you overpaid at Automatic, you’ll feel that and more at DuPont. It’s very good, but Bottega is still a step above IMO and you actually won’t spend as much.

Dyron’s actually has a pretty damn good steak. Just not one I ever really think about.

breweries

IMHO, the current brewery "hot hand" is Back-40. Tons of space outside and inside. Close second is Avondale, especially if there is live music. Just want to drink (lots of) interesting beers? Tie between TrimTab and Ghost Train, and they're a few blocks from each other.

I think we went to Dupont for some special dinner thing, because it was a four course meal, so I feel I definitely got my money's worth. App>salad>entree>dessert, and there were at least 3 or 4 options to choose from in each course.

Those two make the worst beer in town, though I do agree they both have great spaces, and the food at Back 40 is really good. One of the more underrated pizzas in town.

We went there before going to a concert at the BJCC years ago, and it was pricey (I wasn't the one paying) but well worth it. We had a similar menu to choose from. I wouldn't necessarily want to go there with a group from work, it is more of a special occasion type place.
