Really? With the hood mixed in just blocks from many nice areas.. With sidewalks that have to be among the worst in the country. With the number of fatass people in the city.. I just want to know in what way is New Orleans a walking town?

most main streets uptown, downtown and FQ are pretty safe to walk on. I have walked on all, at all hours of the day/night.

Same here. I used to be skeptical of how safe it is but as long as you don't go too far off the main streets it seems to be no problem at all.

It's relatively dense, compact, and I imagine zoned pretty strictly, because commercial shops tend to be tightly clustered together

It was my understanding that there is almost no zoning in new orleans

I have no idea why, but that was the only grocery store my ex would go to. I hated it. She didn't even live near it.

That's what someone told me and i believed it since there are residential lots next door to commercial lots everywhere. He may have been talking more about residential area restrictions since there are awesome neighborhoods next to horrible ones.

I've never actually looked it up so

There is most definitely zoning in New Orleans. The FQ may be the most restrictively zoned neighborhood in the country. You can't even paint your shutters without approval from the board.

This. And uptown is a serious pain in the arse for new business permitting/construction, etc. You better find all of the blue hairs, the neighborhood groups, politicians and start kissing arse well before you want to go in with a business.

I was referring more to distinguishing between commercial, residential, and government land/buildings. Zoning is a term with a wide scope. I thought i hinted at where i was going in my post and b/c I responded to a post about commercial shops being close together.

Zoning in New Orleans is definitely a different animal than in a place like Baton Rouge. There's still plenty of arcane goofy zoning restrictions, nevertheless.
