Suerte- get a reservation
Nixta- usually has a line out the door
I think Gabrielas is really good but that may be an unpopular opinion
Fonda San Miguel
El Alma

ETA: It always makes me nervous when I agree with Paul Allen.

I dont see $10 enchiladas on any of those menus!

Those are some fancy mexican restaurants. Distinct difference from tex-mex. Thank you for posting those recs.

We ate there on our last trip to Austin and it's great. We had the guacamole, queso fundido, and roasted beef short ribs. It's not a cheap place but was much better than any regular tex mex style place.

There are mostly good suggestions above. I went to Suerte a couple years ago for brunch and was not very impressed. Maybe it was just what I ordered. It was a little too trendy IMO for a Mexican place.

Curras - Oltorf Location

Lichas Cantina is still solid. Love that place.

El Dorado is also very good.

They are but you'll get great food that's not just your basic fajitas and nachos.

East Austin has lots of old school authentic texmex places that are really good and not expensive at all.

Cisco's
Joe's Bakery
Los Comales
Las Cazuelo's
Juan in a Million...breakfast & lunch only

Completely average although they do have great margs. We went there a couple weeks ago because we were on the bicycles and Gabriellas was closed.

Damn. I haven’t been down there in a while but I’ve always loved Curras.

I thought you were in Dallas?

I’ve only been there once and maybe they just knocked it out the park that night but we loved it. I don’t get the downvotes.

The octopus was outstanding.

I am but we are in austin every couple of months. We drove by Curras this time and I wanted to stop and eat by my wife wasn't up to try them again, maybe next time. I did used to love Curras but haven't eaten there in 5 or 6 years.
