I've been using Fogo for a few years now, but due to a very inconsistent bag recently I decided to try Jealous Devil. Yesterday I did a pork shoulder using it, and it was the best I've ever smoked. Everyone in the family agreed it was better than previous times, and the only thing I did differently was change fuel.

In the bag all the pieces so far have been very similar in size, and I had zero dust fall out when pouring. It burned very clean with minimal ash. My Fogo on the other hand had very inconsistent sizes. There were quite a few logs in there and an enourmous amount of dust. As I got to the end of the bag it was nothing but pebbles and dust. Yes this was definitely an outlier for Fogo, as my previous bags have been much more consistent; however, even their more consistent bags were not nearly as consistent as the JD.

I highly recommend this brand. If you haven't tried it yet, give it a shot. I'm sticking with it going forward unless they start to become inconsistent like Fogo did for me.

it's excellent lump. used to buy it at Raks in Youngsville but I believe they are out of business.

Agreed it’s good lump. Two weeks ago Home Depot had it by the grill section and I snagged two bags. I’ve never seen it at a Home Depot before. They usually have Royal Oak.

That's good to know. I thought it was only available online.

Academy now sells JD but I still prefer the FOGO Black Bag from Stine.

Where did you buy? I've been getting FOGO at a local hardware store on the northshore, but have also noticed that its sizing has become pretty inconsistent. I've also noticed that FOGO doesn't burn as hot as Royal Oak so I don't like it as much for high heat cooks.

ETA: the Egg forum guys really like the Rockwood brand charcoal. They have it at Ace. I tried it once for some slow cooks but didn't hook anything super hot to test how hot it burns.

Did they? I feared this might happen.

Exactly. My previous two bags were like this. After the second I decided to try JD. I've seen quite a few very positive reviews of it over the years, and I'm glad I gave it a shot. I don't know about its high heat output yet as I just did my first cook using it to smoke a pork shoulder. The sizes of the chunks do look to be appropriate for some high heat production though. We shall see.

Gonna have to try this out. I passed on it last time I saw it because the label looks like a label that should be on fireworks

Right! It's a cheesy label, but the product really is great.

Yes. It's normally in the garden area near the registers.

I’ve been using Rockwood. It’s $30 a bag and I usually have coupons each month from Ace to take it down to 25 or 20. Am I missing out?

Jealous Devil makes an XL lump, and it is really good. I have a charcoal thread i'll bump. I found the XL had nice sized chunks, but took a bit longer to get lit. Found the JD @ Home Depot.

Still though, the best and most consistent large chunks has been the Kamado Joe Big Block XL. Lowe's carries big block.

This is usually based on the way it is shipped & handled.

It’s hard to find consistent lump anywhere due to that variable

I use FOGO from Hutch's in Prairieville.
I've had 1 bag out of a few years of buying it now that was about 1/2 dust. They exchanged it no questions though.
Its so efficient. I have a Big Joe and it amazes me how long that thing will cook on one bowlful.
