That's smooth as glass but needs to seasoned.

apparently the converse isn't true because this is what a brand new pre-seasoned lodge looks like.

Vintage Griswold or Wagner. You will pay more. They cook better are lighter and will only increase in value. I get a kick out of cooking in a 120 year old pot. (BTW, I gave away all my Lodge pots when I started using the Griswold)

Totally agree. They also have a very smooth cooking surface. That surface makes cooking so much easier.

Go to junk stores, Salvation Army stores, Maybe pawn shops and if you see a used skillet or pot you like and it isn't broken or cracked and in the price range you like, then you have found your pot or skillet. If you se an estate sale in the paper, go take a look. There is almost always one or two cast iron pieces at any estate sale you visit. If you get there in the first hour or two they usually don't sell right away.

I totally agree with this! I found a Lodge 10" pot at a thrift store in Church Point. It was rusted something fierce. After a lot of work, it is my favorite pot to cook smaller family meals. My wife has given away some of our smaller aluminum stuff, because she likes the way the food tastes in that pot. Every time I use it, I think of the time and effort I poured into restoring it. Last, I only paid $10 for it, lid and all.

Please, by that logic, no man should ever have a home project. I guess I shouldn't Play with my kids, go fishing, play golf, my time is too valuable.

All cast iron on the market will cook very similar, once seasoned.
A lot of people I know would lose it over this statement
But I agree for the most part even though I'm partial to Griswold.

Very good advice, but if I may add WARPED. Many do not think of this and they get home and sit it on their induction range or flat burner and you find out it is warped and it's a pain.

If you don't find one, then buy a Lodge and keep looking. You can always use another cast iron skillet or pot and having several sizes is only better.
Again, excellent advice. Couldn't agree more.

I guess my point was I'd rather be doing any of those things with my time than dicking around with $10 pan. To each his own.

Also, I just dumped all of my Apple stock and put everything into cast iron pots.
