I know we're getting far off the OP topic but I think he is probably looking at an increase in rent at that location now that the road is getting close to finishing (allegedly). I bet he can find a cheaper location and let's face it, a homebrew shop doesn't have to rely much on impromptu sales or casual walk-ins because they see the sign out front.
I remember the first homebrew shop I frequented in BR, back in the 90's, was off Lobdell near Tom Drive. Set back in a strip of office locations.

I think that Marcello's is really really expensive.

Their malt, hops, and yeast prices are pretty much on par with Austin Homebrew, which is where I usually order from online.
Really? Their Wyeast packs are 12.99! I didn't think that they extract was that much more expensive. But I thought their hops were 2.99 an ounce, which is a little more expensive.

As others have suggested, I would order a basic starter kit from Northern Brewer or Austin Homebrew or someplace similar. There are kits for IPA's which I don't think would be too much for a first brew. IPA is a pretty forgiving style.
The status of Redstick Homebrew does constantly seem to be in limbo, so I think these would be a better option.
Now you just need to start thinking about how you will keep your fermentation temperatures down in an acceptable range.

Good point. I enjoy having a store in town but the stock there always seems to be a problem.

This is just ridiculous.

Don't remember about the yeast packs... the hops were $1.99 last time I looked. The dry yeast packs were cheap though.
Stock on the malt and hops is the biggest issue, so I'd prefer to buy online if possible due to timing.

That could be the case. I certainly like it as an option since it is basically on my way home from work but I agree that stock is the main issue. I am starting to order pretty much everything. I use Brewmaster's Warehouse because they offer 6.99 shipping that comes in like 2-3 days (coming from ATL) and they give you 10% off when you use BNARMY as the promotion code.
I really would like to support Red Stick but the combination of price/location/stock/hours makes it difficult for me to make it a regular thing.

Is that the price at Marcellos? I never even checked the yeast prices there because their selection was down to about 2 and niether was anywhere close to what I needed.
$12 is ridiculous!

Me too but I usually wait until Saturday morning to decide to brew.

Red Sticks stock is what did me in. I ran over there after work trying to get there before they closed to get a hydrometer since I broke mine. They didnt have one.. WTF? I shop mostly from Austin Homebrew (their shipping time is really nice)

Plus it's a flat-rate $7 shipping. I usually stock up on extract malts (yeah, still doing extract) and any supplies I need when I order.
Then naturally when it comes time to brew I want to add something else and need to hit the store and they're out.

I have to agree there. I don't think I have ever walked into that store with a recipe and walked out with all that I needed. I am always having to settle for a "substitute" ingredient.
That said, AHS scares me recently. Another brewing forum I read has a long current thread with MANY members who claim their credit card numbers have been stolen within a few days after ordering from them. Many are saying this was the only transaction on their card besides the stolen ones. Very suspicious.

I shop at Defalcos They have an excellent selection... Have some great recipes and they will send you all the ingredients you need.

That store has a lot of issues. I have not been in since I was berated by the proprietor. One of his minions screwed up my order bad and it became my fault.
