Beer Mavens: Looking for advice on shipping

I have a good friend in Baton Rouge who doesn't get to leave town very often (young child, job, etc.). He's a huge beer nerd and I can get a lot of things here in Dallas he can't back home. I know shipping beer is technically illegal, but how do you guys work around it? Any links or personal advice would be appreciated.

Illegal with USPS, frowned upon with FedEx. FedEx just sends a form letter asking for it not to be done again.
Wrap everything in zip locks.
Don't over pack with beer.
Buffer with scrap cardboard, paper, diapers....

I've done it a couple of times, usps and ups.
I just wrapped everything in bubble wrap then put them in a box and had it already sealed when I got there to ship it.
That being said I did fail and shipping some cigar city stuff back a few weeks ago, employee at the ups store asked if it was beer, I said no it was some local sodas, he said ok then open the box. I smiled and left the store.

Yeah, was right before my flight home, luckily my buddy that lives there kept it, would have just given it to some homeless person if not I guess

Use fedex ground. It's about $1 per 12 oz beer. Put every beer in a gallon zip lock bag after wrapping it with small bubble wrap. Then use additional bubble wrap, foam, whatever to cushion around them. Don't try to over pack the box. Make sure you could drop the package 3-4 feet and be comfortable that nothing will break. Make a good trade, enjoy!

I did quite a bit of research before I shipped any beer and Fedex ground is the way to go. Just make sure to put everything is a ziplock bag and if something breaks then it won't leak everywhere.

I go to the post office website and have the padded shippers sent to me for free. I place bottles and cans in each one. Then I find a large box put 2 garbage bags inside and arrange the bottles/cans so that there is not much movement. Sometimes I fill with newspaper unless I have styrofoam from previous trades. I go to Fedex.com and print my label and drop it off at a FedEx pick-up location.

Yeah wine shippers as well, I ordered some on amazon but I hate sending them unless it is a regular trading partner

Wine shippers are by far the best option to me, but also the most expensive. I usually pack like my box will be dropped from an airplane. And buddy or not, throw something in there he/she isn't expecting. I use FedEx because I don't have a reason to stop using them.

Yeah. This.
If you elect to go the bubblewrap route, one tip is to use rubber bands to hold the wrap in place around the bottle. Skip the tape. Especially if you are expecting a return box. That makes it easier for them to unpackage and they are more likely to reuse the same packaging materials. Those materials can get expensive, so if you can recycle them that's a bonus.

Tape your lids down with electrical tape!!! I had a cap come off in one shipment. Unbelievable! Also, like other said, use ziplocks, in case there is a break.

I have bought new wine shippers, but I've also gone to a wine shop and they have wine boxes that they will sell for 2-3 bucks, so check out your local wine shops...
