Who told you that about black ash? They were blowing smoke up your arse...pun intended. Black ash comes from typically lower quality and poor nutrient soils. White and gray ash with white streaks are signs of higher quality tobacco and a properly rolled cigar.
From the looks of your cigar up top, it's hard to tell. You'll be looking for a triple cap at the top, bands that are aligned perfectly as they don't put on a shitty ban to a great cigar. The color of the wrapper is on par as well.

Genuinely looking longer your box raises questions. The stamp on the bottom is barely visible, the warranty seal is placed on there quickly, as mentioned it's usually halfway through the first crest where it creases. There is no visible dating of numbering system to the box no the other traditional habanos seals.
In my "I used to work in a cigar shop for many years" opinion, there is a likely possibility those aren't actually real. In the end, if you enjoyed it, what does it really matter.

So far the box is fake so the stogies likely are too...but if they smoke good then smoke em.

He doesn't have the required seal on the box to verify the goods sadly. The verification barcodes are fairly new and those boxes come with holographic seals and excessive measures to prevent counterfeit nowadays.

Ok, so now I too am sober and can give it a better look. The box brand stamp looks wrong. If it is legit, the paper seal will have a hologram. The lettering suggests that they are from 2001.

Likely fakes...
Missing the Habanos SA tag applied to the corner of the box. The labeling on the bottom of the box should be burned in and not ink. Holograms on the Cuba sticker have been standard for several years. The serial number on the label can be entered at the Habanos SA website for verification as well and your label doesn't fit the usual numeric profiles.

That one can not be checked on there site. That is the correct look from 1999 to 2009...but it should also have a hologram that you can only see via a black light. In 2009 it was changed to the current style with the hologram on the end and numbers you can check on there site. But yes its missing the one sticker and the bottom stamp is off...not hot stamped...Habanos is not centered correctly.
It should look like this...with the factory code and month/year they were made (missing in this pic)
They are fakes...but still could be good. The problem comes in when some of the ones making them use the tobacco scraps that fell on the floor of the factories to make them. Then you get all kinds of trash to smoke as well.
