Apples for me by a mile. Apples are sturdy, I've carried them in a backpack for miles or tucked into a tote bag and they're still completely edible after a week of being schlepped around. Wash before you leave home, wrap in a paper towel, and you're ready to go: no utensil necessary to eat it out of hand, no sticky juice or messy peel to discard. Apples pair better with my other carry-along lunch staples, sharp cheddar and dry cured meats (or Slim Jims, if you're budget lunching).

As much as I love satsumas, they're harder to eat on a plane or train, and you've got to wash your hands when you're done. (Though they are more fragrant than an apple)

Orange. It can be very versatile. I like a citrus twang in a lot of foods.

All the other fruits mentioned in the thread and not one mention of the humble Pear?

Pears are like even better apples!

I truly can't tell the difference visually between a honeycrisp, gala or jazz apple. So I never know which one I'm eating.

They all have skin that is red with streaks/spots of green/yellow. Red Delicious is the only apple of the reds I can concretely identify.

The whole (red) apple has to be eaten in a very limited time once bitten or cut into .

Try this sometime. Cut the apple in half, top to bottom, cut out the stem and blossom end and remove all the seed pod. Cut it in half again across the apple and then thinly slice it and put it in a bowl.

Add olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and black pepper and make sure the apple slices are evenly coated. Place this in the fridge and eat it the next day.

Very refreshing with sweet, salty and tangy flavors coming through.
