My Panasonic microwave died on me tonight. It made an awesome buzzing sound and then belched a putrid toasted electric smoke from its nether regions.

I guess it's about 5 years old, and I use it a good bit. Does anyone have suggestions on a good brand? I suspect they are all crap now anyway, but maybe I'm wrong.

They cost about twelve bucks. Put a crowbar in that wallet and support the US deficit to China. Five years? That's like grandpa microwave.

Too much! It's primary task is heating up water for my french press.

I should clarify. It is a counter top model. My kitchen cabinets have a nook that holds it.

Microwaves are a commodity item - buy the cheapest one that is big enough for your requirements and hope it lasts 3-4 years - rinse and repeat.

Unfortunately that is what I figured. I was hoping the board had some magical secret I wasn't privy to.

Time to buy another fine product!

I've had my Sharp for about 7 years now and it's still going strong. My parents still have the Amana they bought when I was about 8...that was 30 years ago.

And that Amana weighs about forty pounds and cost your parents about $1500.

My Whirlpool is only 23 this year. It looks its age, but damnit, it still works like a horse. They don't make stuff like they used to.

No, it was only about $300...but in those days that was like spending about $800 today.

The whole appliance manufacturing business is so incestuous you don't know who is who anymore.

Amana was owned by maytag, now owned by whirlpool, and apparently makes some of the Viking fridges.

Who makes Who (may be outdated...)

when microwaves came out my mom bought this whole set of microwaving cookbooks. i read through them and laughed my arse off. apparantly when the microwave came out, people thought it was some kind of amazing gift from god.

i use mine MAYBE once every two weeks, when i eat a lean pocket. i tried to throw it away when we remodeled but the other half wouldn't let me.

Microwave = popcorn, canned soup, melting butter for baking, heating leftovers, quick oatmeal, Lean Cuisine, hot water for tea, warming hot fudge sauce and cheese dip.
I use mine constantly.

Yeah, our hot water heater sprung a leak while I was gone to Montana for work this week and the guys replacing it told my wife it was made in 1972. They said that no matter what they got to replace it, it wouldn't be as good because they don't make them like that anymore.

make sure there is plenty of ventilation around the unit so the hot air exhaust can escape. if not no model will last very long.
