Is it worth the hype?

Can it be found in Louisiana

Yes, it's a classic. No, it cannot be found in LA retail.

The closest thing I've had to it--Lagunitas Sucks--is available in Louisiana and less than 2 mos old 6-packs are on shelves all over the state.
Try Sucks and if you like it, you will love Pliny.

Maybe ten or 15 years ago when there weren't as many top notch breweries around, but not now. It is a decent beer for sure, but not worth waiting in the line that wraps around the building for it. I can think of half a dozen beers better than that one, just in Nashville, off the top of my head.

Nice. I'll be near Nashville in January. So, off the top of your head, name 3.

Everytime I check a Lagunitas package it's old as dirt. I must be shopping at places that get the snicklefritz

Name me half a dozen better west coast IPAs just in Nashville. Hell, there's only one Nashville brewery that consistently brews a good west coast IPA (New Heights IPA).

Pliny is the benchmark for it's style. Pliny is on the same pedestal as beers like Saison Dupont, Pilsner Urquell, Anchor Steam, and many other style-defining beers. You don't say something is better than Pliny. You say something is as good as Pliny.

I said I could name half a dozen better beers - not half a dozen west coast IPAs.

Also, I can only assume you're trolling if you think New Heights is the best. Yikes.

This, pretty much only a ailable in Cali although you can find it on tap at select craft beer bars at a few cities such as Denver, Portland and NYC.

I had it once at one of the bars in San Fran. It was sort of warm and flat so I won’t judge it based on that.

I’ve had it on a couple of trips to California and it was awesome. While I enjoy a hazy IPA from time to time, I much prefer the west coast style. Pliny is top notch in my book and the only beer I have ever enjoyed more was Alpine Windows Up.

I believe Russian River ships direct to customer in a few states so if you got a friend in one of those states you can get them to Fedex.

Edit: looks like they only direct ship in California
