Cross posted to money board - I’m looking to launch a product and need to either find someone out there that’s close to where we live or that can drop ship after making. Local def locks in better returns, but I’m worried about th

I can tell you most comercial manufacturing (baking) operations will require a minimum order and a guaranteed periodic order at that minimum.

Find a local bakery and ask them. They will likely do smaller orders.

I worked as VP of R&D and product development for 10 years for a commercial packaging and medical device company. I can't tell you how many folks approached us with their "Lifelong Dream Product" and when we asked for order quantities they would say "500, but we plan on selling millions." Then they would get angry when we told them our minimm order size. If i heard it once, I heard it 50 times, "You will be sorry you turned down this opportunity!" Fact is, we never were.

I googled and saw there are 30 commercial bakeries near you (Northern Virginia). Google will be your friend in your search.

Good Luck

Yes, I’m looking for a local bakery as well but also this is not something I’m re-creating the wheel with. The wheel may be re-created if I have to utilize a bakery up here which would lead to quality issues IMO. This is something super easy to bring to market but would like to understand logistics, min order of product over a 3-4 month period etc.

You asked the question. I know 2 in BR. But your post doesn’t tell us details. There’s nothing else for me to say but to reach out and ask. That’s The only info I can give you.

I don’t know if it’s a pastry or a loaf of bread you’re wanting. I don’t know how much you want. I don’t know if it’s a product they already make or if it’s a product you want them to make just for you.

My work in the meat processing industry taught me that it 100% depends on each processor. Some will do something small others won’t touch anything small.

I was looking for connections. Networking etc. Ie people on this board that are directly involved with one or have a good connection to say xyz@company abc. Clearly I know how to google wholesale bakeries, but I'd rather not get lost in some black hole somewhere nor would I like to toss out what I'm doing to the world on this board.

I’ll do my best to help.

Bakery has seen a ton of consolidation and acquisitions over the last few years, with medium sized outfits getting gobbled up. As a result, there isn’t usually a ton of open manufacturing capacity (especially with recent labor crisis).

What you need is a combination of capability (can they produce your desired format), automation (if it’s highly manual most won’t touch), and packaging (can they package like you need).

Can you say if your format is more bread, cookie, cake, etc?

is your product so unique that no one has thought to produce it?
what state do you want to produce the product in?
how will you advertise and distribute product given shelf life issues.

No they are sold here (Virginia) literally at two grocery stores and are absolute garbage quality wise. People thing they’re the real deal but these people have never had the real deal.

My plan is to not have a store front initially but have a mobile location and create a marketing plan around a Thursday through Sunday blitz sales approach. Social media, marketing etc to create the buzz before the annual launches etc etc
