Are there any local food specialties or places with awesome versions of something that have to be tried? Not fine dining. Thanks!

Superior Pho is the best I've had in the state. And their bahn mi is might fine as well.

Agree with the Superior Pho suggestion.
The Flat Iron is a cool historic Irish pub with good food. It's been around since the early 1900s. Good fried perch from Lake Erie. Really good wings. Love their perogies (I know, not Irish).

We enjoyed lucky’s cafe when I visited. Nothing fancy though.

Slymans at lunchtime for corned beef sandwich. It will be the best you've ever had.
Johnny's bar on Fulton. I like to go late lunch/early afternoon and sit at the bar with the old guard movers and shakers . Great conversations all around.

Went to Flat Iron last night. The shepherds pie with actual lamb was really good and the wings were excellent. Thanks.

Mabel’s BBQ. It’s owned by Iron Chef Michael Symon. Very unusual take on BBQ, and BBQ sides. Forget what you know about BBQ, and go in with an open mind. We all loved it.
