I see people posting recipes and talk about putting so many pounds of premixed seasoning per pound of crawfish, fill your pot up till the cover the crawfish, etc. IMO and what I've found is having the right ratio of water to seasoning is the key to a good boil. Your basix mixes are typically only for 5 or 6 gallons of water but no one takes the time to measure that out. I think that's why we here people talk about how much better the their 2nd boil is compared to the first.

Am I off base here?

no, you are spot on.

to get consistent results you use the same pot with the same amount of water each time no matter how much seafood you have.

i use a 100 quart pot half full of water and then dump in a 4.5 lbs jar of zatarains dry crab boil mix and thats all you need for a "mild" seasoning, but if you want it spicy, i add a 16oz bottle of zatarains liquid crab boil so it has some heat to it. after its cooked i turn fire off and lift the basket and tip at 45 degree angle to rest on top of the pot for 5 minutes to stop the cooking, then i drop the basket back in and allow 30 minute soak time before dumping it out to serve.

if i do more then one batch i will add in another half jar of the dry mix and half bottle of the liquid for the second boil

This... Plus settling in on using the same brand seasoning. Once you use the same brand seasoning a couple times you figure out how to tweak it for taste. Nothing fricks up the crawfish like too much salt.

Basically this. If it was my first time boiling, I might measure out my water, but you can always just taste the water or adjust the seasoning in future batches if the results are not what you wanted. I know how much water to fill my pot up to by the number of holes in the basket.

I fill my pot to the top of the 5th basket ring every time and never had a complaint with my recipe, boil them float, soak them till the sink, don't worry about a time.
