It's been a long time since I've had it, but I remember it being one of the best beers Abita puts out.

I would suggest trying Urban South 2nd Set Pilsner instead.

Trust me, if I'm saying something positive about an Abita beer, that comment is the outlier.

I had a Vanilla Turbo Dog one time at the brewery that was delicious

I haven't had it in a good while, but I remember it being one of their best seasonal offerings.

Yes, it is a maibock. It's not a bad offering.

I enjoy it. That and their brown ales seem to be what they do best.

The consensus in my circle of friends seems to be that it tastes like dirty mardi gras beads.

Just tried their pilot brew at the brewery. king cake bock "bochus". Tastes about like u would think... sweet. The mardi gras bock is ok. I prefer purple haze

If this is the Mardi gras Bach you're talking about, the dirty beads comment is very true. Took me several months to finish a 6 pack. Bought other offerings to avoid having it as my only option.

The wife picked up some Abita Maison Blanc, a LA only beer that they make with Sauvignon blanc grapes. It's light and crisp. So if that suits you, it's a decent choice.
