I'm ok with it, but do we know if they will be replacing their 6 packs of bottles for cans 100% or will this be an option?

quote from the article i posted on the first page:

Abita will also continue packaging in glass just as they have since they began brewing in 1986.

Any idea what the canning operation line will run them by comparison?

No idea, but selling strictly Abita Amber in cans would outsell any select bomber by a really big ratio.

I'm sure Abita has done all of the math and know how to operate their business better than any of us could. Not saying they don't make mistakes, but I'm sure the cost/benefit ratio has been done to death with the addition of the canning line.

They probably will push more units this way, but look at the hype St. Arnold gets when Divine Reserve is released. I don't know why it wouldn't be similar. That stuff sells out in a heartbeat.

Im sure the math is in their favor I was just asking kfizzle if he knew how much they spent on the canning operation in relation to what he knows about the $$ spend on their bottling.

Im not asking about the cost savings for canning instead. Im curious to know how much more does it cost to setup bottling vs canning if anything.

You also have to look into how much more money you save in shipping cans as opposed to bottle. I think that bottles weigh 35% more than cans. Cans also stack easier and pack more efficiently. I'm sure shipping cans saves a lot of money over shipping bottles.

here is an article on the recent trend toward canning. the co-founder of Souther Star claims it is cheaper to set up a canning line than a bottling line but he doesn't give numbers.

Cans vs. bottles

I do in fact know the hard numbers, but I'm not going to throw those out on a message board, that would be highly unethical on my part. Sorry, have to draw a line somewhere.

Ok again.. Im talking about startup costs.. NOT how much cheaper per can it is than a bottle.

Im curious if new microbreweries are going that route because the setup is cheaper.

So Im looking for setup costs not savings per can.

They've been gearing up for this for 2 years

Must be what they're using the warehouse they broke ground on about a year and a half ago. You can't just pop one that quick.

Wasnt looking for actual numbers just more like is it a lot more to setup a bottling operation than a canning operation. Or vice versa. If so is it alot more or just marginal?

Not sure, they did just rebuild the old warehouse shell about 2 years ago, so you might be thinking of that. I haven't been out there in awhile though, so I'm not sure what kind of physical progress they've made on it. I don't think they started construction on the canning stuff until late 2010 or early this year though.

Ah, on that I have no idea. I just know what it cost them to build the canning operation, and that relative to the rest of their assets, its enormous. Its definitely a bold financial move, although with their continued growth I don't doubt that it will pay off relatively quickly.

Ahh ok I misunderstood I thought you were saying the bottling operation was the big ticket item.

I’m just trying to make sense of why a startup like Tin Roof would jump to cans when they haven’t established a real presence in the market yet.

Kegging is by far going to be a cheaper operation. So I dont get why the jump to canning unless its immediatly cheaper than the alternative of bottling.

I would be shocked if they aren't outsourcing the canning to someone else.

They're decently established in BR by now... and craft beer drinkings won't be put off by the cans. Most of us know better by now and will look at Tin Roof before a canned BMC.

And the usual BMC drinkers are going to see the cans, see the upcoming LSU branding, and give it a try. If they can convert a few handfuls of BMC drinkers to Tin Roof then they've accomplished their goal. Cans aren't going to hinder that goal, and with them knowing the LSU branding was coming, cans are the perfect choice for tailgating presence.

im not a beer snob, and i cant taste the difference between a bottle or a can or a glass.

is it safe to say that most of the world is like me, and this isn't something negative like some of the beer snobs are making it out to be in this thread?

It's definitely not a negative... Abita should have done this 10 years ago.

All the cool kids are canning. It's the new over-hopping.

IDK, maybe it was more like a year ago. They built a new small warehouse at the front (closer to the road) of the brewery.
