re: 8 Things You Can Do to Make Your Server Hate You

I am trying to think of the best way to make it easiest on the servers.
First, call the manager beforehand and make sure that it won't be an issue to get separate checks, and find out how much gratuity will be included on each check.
IMO, separate checks would be ideal, and let others worry about it if they want to pick up someone else's tab. Because it's sushi and a lot of people order different things & then split them, you might want to include a small note with the invitation that lets people know that the servers will be charging for what each individual orders and will be including a xx% gratuity onto each individual check.
Is there a charge for the room which one person will be responsible for or is there no fee?

No fee. They said they can close off the upstairs for me.. and that they often do it for large parties.

I'm thinking this as well. I already made the reservations, but I am going to call to confirm they're still in place and ask what their advice is about the check situation.
I already mailed out the invites so unless they don't do separate checks AT ALL, I'm not going to contact the people invited :) If they don't do separate checks at all, I'll call and tell everyone to bring cash.

how about a consumer list of 8 things NOT to do to guarantee you'll make a decent tip ...

6. Ask for separate checks at the same table. Ok. We realize there’s extenuating circumstances for this - you’re expensing the meal, you’re with a super large group, etc. But for the most part, people who ask for their own check are just too lazy/stupid to do a little simple math. Let's face it, if you can’t do basic math, maybe you shouldn’t be out interacting in public. Also, we're pretty sure all cell phones these days come equipped with mini tip calculators. Dude, there's an app for that!
Really? This is part of their damn job. A table just paid your way into a new shirt and you want to complain because they didn't just give you one check? Laughable

I don't have a credit card. I'm in college with 0 debt and don't plan to have any.
You should just have everyone bring cash and put their portion towards the one bill. I assume it'll be adults at your table, so they can manage to stop at an ATM, no?
And as a side note - if you care enough to have zero debt, you should care enough to improve your credit score - get a credit card, charge a pair of socks, and pay it off at the end of the month. Any positive activity is better than none.

Yeah. I already sent out the invites. I am going to talk with the restaurant and see what they recommend. If I can avoid calling 25 people and telling them to bring cash, I'd like to. Just making every person a separate order is generally easy :)

My dad isn't into this idea right now. Maybe later

I guess if I had a daughter who was barely old enough to drink, I might be reticent as well.

it is the modern computer age .. go back to the fricking order .. break it out seperately, walk back to the table and ask who had what .. wow, that is tough ..

I think separate checks are embarrassing after you've graduated from colleg and you're not an 80 year old woman.
Being a server is not an easy job. I absolutely agree that you owe the server a little bit of courtesy (just like anyone you do business with). A couple of you sound like eating at a restaurant is the only opportunity you have in life to exercise any authority and, by God, you're going to exercise the crap out of it.

Yep. Then complain because it's dry.

Would merely be confirmation.

When I had a birthday party at Rock N Sake last year they had no problem splitting the checks between singles and couples. For instance, my friend paid for my food, a couple of couples were together, and the rest of the table of about 15 paid individually.
We mentioned it to the waitress beforehand that we'd be doing it this way and she had not problem. So you should be good. You can call ahead and make sure, but I think giving any decent waiter/waitress a heads up makes separate checks totally doable, even for a large party.
